Hello,

New member, first post.

I am looking for a BJ40 post 1977. I am not a collector, just looking for a decent Sunday driver and something to work on. My budget for the initial purchase is around $20k. I own boats so I understand the "hole in the ocean" concept. I have been looking around for awhile just to get a sense for what is available and I think I have my expectations set appropriately for what $20k should buy me. I am looking for something as close to original as practical given the age of these vehicles rather than being beautifully restored. Vehicle location is not too important given shipping costs these days.

Feel free to post the vehicles here or pm me if preferred. Posting here would be good since I really like the (mostly) constructive criticism by some of the really experienced members.

Thanks for your consideration.

Rick

Welcome to MUD!

Have you searched the BJ40 classifieds section? I found four for sale on eBay.

I have spent a fair amount of time there. To give you a sense for what I am looking for here is one I bid on and dropped off at $16.3K. I actually really liked this vehicle without seeing it and feel I probably should have gone higher. My plan was to fly to inspect the vehicle prior to paying. For a data point I would appreciate any comments from the experts regarding this vehicle at $16.5K.

The others currently listed on ebay:
- I would prefer to stay away from a vehicle that is still in CR and needs to be imported. If the vehicle is here and titled I would be willing to look, but not interested in taking on the risk of importing myself. That eliminates two that I see on ebay currently.
- One has the drive train modified, I would prefer original

This one looks interesting. Would be interested to hear the opinion of any experts that would care to take a look. It is a bit more than I would like to budget but I am coming to the conclusion that might be what I am going to have to do to buy. What is the opinion of that vehicle at the advertised price. BTW, should I be concerned about the diamond plate on the rocker panels? Seems like a red flag to me.

Again, thanks in advance for anyone that wants to contribute. I understand the advice from some of the experts on this board is invaluable.

Rick,

Any time I see diamond plate always think it's a cover up and stay away. I watched the video and noticed an engine knock, if you listen beyond the diesel clanking there's distinct knocking sound, it may be a bad lifter or needing a valve adjustment or it could be something else. Listen to the video and let me know if you hear it as well.

Agreed on the diamond plate.

Thanks for the heads up on the engine knock. I had not heard it previously. Hopefully I am not hearing it because you told me to, but I do now hear it. It seems persistent and does not go away as the engine warms.

I will probably approach the owner with the question. He is probably here on this site and is all ready to answer. Thanks again for taking the time to look.

I'm selling an FJ/BJ40 listed here and on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/131583197188?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
I stand buy it LC, I'll even split the cost of your flight to come and check it out. I'm about a 2 hour drive from Albuquerque, in Las Vegas NM
Here are a few questions you may have that I have answered for another interested person.
Why are you selling? Not using it enough, have a motorcycle that I'm spending my free on. Have a diesel 4runner that is less pricey but great off road.
Ever wrecked? Never wrecked while I've owned it and there is nothing by looking at the frame or body that it was ever wrecked
How long have you owned it? What is the history? I've owned it since I think 2010
Who did the 3B/H55F swap work? Wimberley Four Wheel Drive is in San Marcos, the owner is Daniel Edone
How many miles were on the engine and tranny from the donor Canadian BJ60? Have either been rebuilt? got it with 83,000 now has 89,000
What alterations to the 40 were needed to make it work? (e.g. driveshaft, t-case, cross-members, ebrake, making room for shifter, etc.) The best answer is Yes, all that had to be redone
Any issues related to the swap, or signs of problems with this “mod”? No seriously this is a tight truck, runs great
Is it 12V or 24V? Switched from 24 to 12v
Do you have paperwork / documentation from Kent's Diesel? I have a receipt somewhere. Kent actually tried to buy it from me, so that should tell you how much he thought of the truck.
Does engine smoke at all? smokes like any smooth running 3B would, not being sarcastic
Any head gasket issues? None
Glow plugs – condition? working fine, starts easy but when it gets colder it takes longer on the Glow plug button and starts ruffer, but this is to be expected.
Any leaks anywhere? No leaks
Brakes and components (master/slave)-- any issues? How old are brake lines? No brake issues
Steering -- tight? loose? Power steering has some play but I wouldn't describe it as loose like an old CJ or Ford pickup
Steering knuckles – any weeping, leaks? steers fine, all the front end components look good. Have a Old Man Enu steering stabilizer that came with the new suspension kit that hasn't been installed.
Paint – is it original? No I had it repainted when the rust on the rear quarters and below the ambulance doors was taken care of, the top was done at the same time also, about 2 years ago.
Any undercoating on undercarriage (tub, frame, axles, rear quarter panels)?
You have clear title? Clear Texas title.
If you are really serious I'll split the ticket with you to fly out and see it for your self. That way you can see it for yourself and feel comfortable buying. I do have it on Ebay and on Craigslist so it might sell that way. I do have perfect scores selling stuff on Ebay. Sold a Husqvarna Motorcycle and got good feedback from that transaction, probably my biggest sale. I have a good job, I do anesthesia, so I 'm lucky to be able to put money into things so they are done right. I am not a mechanic and super knowledgeable like a lot of guys on this site. But at the end of the day all I have is my word and I'll stand by that this is a really nice daily driver LC. Virtually all the 40"s have had some rust. I've described the seat imperfections and the roof liner. This engine/tranny/turbo combination is awesome, just read what the others on this have to say about it. Honestly if it wasn't late in the off road season it would have sold for $17-18k a long time ago, it's a great price for a LC in this good shape.

Hi Ricks20: I am currently looking to import 2 BJ40s from Costa Rica. I have seen these trucks and know the owners. Both have very low/no rust and lived in the mountains. Frames are straight and no rot/rust. This would NOT be a pre-pay scam. Simply, if you are interested I'd bring in and you would have first refusal. It takes about 2 months to ship, clear customs and title in Mass. (I've brought 3 other trucks in) PM me if you would like to know more.

I wonder what that Anchorage BJ40 was? It wasn't mine!
'Course, getting to/from Anchorage is tough, even for me....which should give you an idea of how just far away my 1980 BJ40 is....

But under appropriate circumstances and timing, I would trailer it south. Are you still interested in one?
