Posting for a friend...I have driven the truck and can vouch as follows:
Price: $1750
1973 FJ40 (registered and inspected), with hardtop (hard top is a bit rough..glass intact)
2F engine from an 83 FJ60 (runs strong, no knocks or anything)
Disc brakes (I am told from a 76 front end)
Skyjacker leaf springs (new in 2006)
Ramsey 9000 winch with cable
Saginaw power steering
New parts (installed in last 3 years), knobby tires, shocks, battery, alternator, starter
Rollcage in place.
Warn locking hubs
Transmission (4spd) shifts fine. I did not test the transfer case.
The bad....the body is in rough shape.... the owner dealt with normal body panel rust on the quarters by having a friend rivet thin sheet metal. Looks fine for a woods truck, but not show. I have been under the vehicle and DID NOT see delamination of the frame at the rear spring hangers. I did not see cracks in the frame. The rear crossmember is rusty and the diagonal supports have been replaced (if I recall) with round tube. Hood, cowl and front fenders have dings and resemble the rear quarters. The rear swing out doors have been welded in place. Currently rattle can camo....
The truck was a hard start and stalled out on me a couple of times. The carb probably needs to be gone through, the gas drained and replaced.....etc. It could be a bad ground near the starter as well. I didn't dick with it...The motor was strong...noticeably so. It has been driven 1-2 per year for the past 5 years.
That's my take....seems like a good opportunity for someone looking for such a project or as a woods beater.
