I have a 1972 FJ40 3sp on the floor that I use as my DD for sale. I have a chance to get a needle-in-the-haystack motorcycle that is a once in a lifetime find. I've had it about a year and a half now and drive it pretty much everyday. Got some good, got some bad, but it's dependable and you can drive it home if you wanted to - although it only goes about 60. I actually drove round trip to Austin in it a month ago and she did fine.

I did not do the work, but the rig is detailed in this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/72’-“black-and-tan”-40-build.583242/

I've only added a few things - optima red top, and an alternator & voltage regulator. I drive it everyday.
Got hit with some hail a month or so back so the soft top got hammered. I was just about to order one from Trollhole - that can be discussed.

It does not have a hard top, but does have many extra parts that would come with it if you wanted.
I am looking to get $8000 for it - that can be discussed, but I'm not going to give it away. Even though it's a 3sp it would be hard to build on at this price.

Lemme know what you think. Easier to contact me at: juanverde@Verizon.net

Could you post some pics of the bad? Peaked my interest back when I saw this on CL a while back

I'll be posting a walk around video later this evening. I'll start it cold and you can hear it running etc.

I'll get some pics of the bad - basically, it's in the rear tub. It was cut for some fender flares in the past. There is also some questionable fixes in the rear tub - mainly around the seams (they filled them) and towards the bottom edges. However, it is actually pretty solid. The corners are solid. I was going to get patch panels for the wheel arches but started driving it and got rid of my other driver so I never got around to it.

The canvas top was obliterated by a hail storm about a month ago. For now, I have some vinyl material that I siliconed on the top to keep the weather out and things together. Looks silly, but you really don't notice it becasue it's on the top. I was going to order another from Trollhole but am trying to figure out whether I wanted vinyl or canvas. That can be discussed and negotiated if you are serious about buying it.

The mechanical issues: It has an exhaust leak at the front - I suspect it's coming from the exhaust manifold or near. I have a gasket and some headers for it, but I keep driving it. The right rear brake cyclinder has a small leak - I sure it's from puncturing the rubber when adjusting them. All the brake lines and master cylinder & booster are fairly recent and work well. I thought about upgrading to discs when I first go it, but the brakes easily stop this beast so I crosses that off the list. It has a oil drip but not enough to bother me. It also has a small coolant leak that only drips if you park it on a slight incline - I believe that is coming from the freeze plug on the back of the block that you can't get to without dropping the trans etc. Not enough to warrant dropping the motor. Other than that, it starts first time, everytime and has never left me stranded. I've put about 5-6000 miles on it - my commute to work is very short. It shifts fine and the 4x4 works H and L.

The good: it has alot of recent (within 2 years or so) work and parts on it. Front fenders, side steps are new. Brake lines, wheel cylinder, master & booster, clutch cylinder and lines are newer. Battery, alternator, voltage regulator are newer. I have a few boxes of extra/spare parts. There is a rather large pile of receipts dating back to the 90s. After going through them, it seemed like it was a project for a longtime, switched hands a few times, but at least it wasn't sitting in a field for decades. It has current Texas registration and inspection. Clear TX title in my hand.

It's a good dependable driver as in.

I know I'll regret selling it but I really want the motorcycle that I found. I know I'll never find another in my lifetime, but I can always find another 40.
I'll get that video up this evening and I'll field any other questions you guys have.

Here's some pics and some videos, audio is crap.

Sorry guys, typed the wrong price. Starting at 9k. If I can figure out which top I put on it (vinyl or canvas - both stock styled from Trollhole) I'll be pretty firm at 9k. If you want to mess with the top, I'd take closer to 8.

Nice FJ40. I am starting the process of looking for one like this and I hope to be able to get something by the end of the summer
