Hi. I am new to Toyotas, new to FJ40s and new to this site. I just bought a '66 and want to restore it to near original condition, if possible. I can tell that a few things (not many) have been modified on my FJ. Thus, I would really like pictures of a 1966 FJ40 to be able to tell what stock looked like and where everything was supposed to be and supposed to look like. It seems from what I can tell from my research that there were many minor changes around my year, so it is very difficult for me to be able to tell what is correct and what is not. As a start, I am looking at the dash and all knobs/switches, the shifter setup, the wheels, the wipers, and the engine (oil filter/carb/air cleaner/battery tray, etc.) Can anyone help?

A couple places to start are:
The tech links on this site
search feature is you friend as well
Toyota has a heritage page that will lend some insite
Several people/vendors here on line will likely chime in as well
do an internet search for the 66 model year dealer brochure & owners manual
pick up the FSM's
Check SOR's website

There are others: You will discover along the way.

Post up pic's of your stuff so we can see.

I am working on pics. What is SOR? My Serial tag shows that I have a FJ40L, which, from what I have learned, is a soft-top model, but it has what appears to be a factory hard-top and doors. I have noticed that soft-top models had different doors with different windows? Mine has the typical roll up windows in the doors, the typical doors for a hard-top model. I have verified that the paint is all original. My serial tag shows a frame number of "FJ40-36466", frame stamp matches serial tag, and engine code is "F 266687". there is also a round brass tab attached to the serial plate that has ""T-66" imprinted on it. Paint code? Is there supposed to be another serial number other than the "frame number"? Thanks for any help. CJ

Specter's catalog (free if you buy some stuff from them and you probably will) has some nice exploded views which will come in handy. Plan on buying a Haynes manual too--probably get one at your local parts house. Original Toyo catalog is preferred by many.

Thanks for the pics! Some silly person did a spring over on mine and not a very good one, so I will be putting it back to stock this holiday weekend. I have "new" (to me) 1966 axles that have not been messed with and stock 1966 driveshafts. I REALLY want to put the shifter back on the column, but need all of those parts to get it there. I am sure that I will find them eventually. I also want to do the PTO winch setup REAL BAD. I also want to get one of those nice soft tops that I see on this site. Where to get one of them?

These FJ's are sooo cool. I have owned over 30 old *eeps, and still own 5, and many S*outs, and still own 2, and this is my first Toyota. Actually, it is my first Asian vehicle of any kind. I am very impressed with the engineering that went into these things, and impressed with the body rigidity.

Cee Jay, where are you located? I'm sure myself or someone in your neck of the woods would be glad to check out your rig and help you identify which parts are stock or what is missing. John Pardi, near Placerville, Calif.

I am in Phoenix, Arizona. That would be great to make local FJ friends. I have met a few nice people already, but no true specialists yet.

Well you have one of the best Land Cruiser Historians real close, Northern Scottsdale, John Pendle, AKA on IH8MUD "living in the past" you can find him in the FJ25 section of this forum. He can talk your ear off about l/c trivia, so listen good. HTH John Pardi

1966 FJ's unite! :)

Welcome to MUD! I was reading your thread and noticed you were in need of column shifter parts. I have the complete column shift assembly from my '65. When I removed the column shifter, I packaged everytihng up with the hopes that I'd find a restorable FJ45 pickup to use the parts on. I'm not sure when or if I'll get started on that project and could use the $$ and space for my current FJ40 re-build. Anyway, if you are interested, I could pull out the parts and get you some pictures.

The top came with it, but the serial plate indicates that it was a soft top model. The condition of the top and the paint color are so close to the body, which is original paint, that I really wonder if it was a dealer add or something. Im a little perplexed by it actually. I will work on more photos.
