Hi Guys, did another search, but still did not quite find the answer I was looking for...

What year did dual master brake cylinders start on the FJ40’s?

I’d like to up-grade my single line on the ’64 to a dual, with out having to go to a booster. I want to keep this simple, and stock “looking”, but still make it safer.

Can a newer dual master just bolt into my ’64…and would I have to change the wheel cylinders as well to match? What year model should I look for?

Besides a roll cage and shoulder seatbelts, this would probably be to only changes I would make to the 25 as well...all in the name of safety.

Thanks

sor has the change at 1970...i think Rabid here on mud made this mod on his?

and looks like the mounting bolt holes are different...was there a duel can for the larger brake lines?

there was a brake line issue also?

somebody here in the 25 section should know definatively :)

I am not 100% sure on this, but I think they went to 10mm in '70 or '71?!? Before that it was 9mm, so my guess is to do this right, I will have to change all the lines, and the wheel cylinders to match...truth be told, I was going to change the rest anyways, just trying to figure out the master.

I think Tyke told me that he did this with a newer master on a '64, and that it might have just bolted in...but I don't remember which year he used :bang:

I am hoping someone here did something similar at one point :)

My 9/70 truck was the first month built that way. OR maybe it was 7/70. One, they added the duelies, the other month they added the booster. Conversion has been done quite a bit, you need a spacer to account for the firewall rail.

I read about the spacers (not that I know where to get one) but I thought they were strickly useful if you intend to add a booster. Since I am not looking to install a booster, I figured I wouldn't need the spacer...or am I mistaken?

So...your '70 has duelies, and no booster...can I trouble you for a couple pictures? You happen to have a P/N on hand for your dual master ? :)

I made the conversion you are speaking of on my 65swb. There should be a pic in the service link on my website.

I had a small batch of adapter plates machined at that time with 8 holes, just using the two master cylinders involved for a template. One large hole to cover the bore, 3 tapered holes to match the original bolt pattern and 4 for the new one. 7 flat head machine screws and voila, a dual master bolted to the firewall!

If you call me at the shop, I'll have a look-see if I have one of those adapters left.;)

Cool Mark...I try and drop you a line this afternoon your time!

Hi Mark,

Just called, and left you a voice mail.

Took a look at your service section, and I could just make out your adapter plate. If you have better pictures, please e-mail them over.

Which dual master did you use? Besides the adapter plate, what else did you do to the new dual master...did you fab a new brake rod?

Thanks,
Dean

Mark...anyway you can get better picks over to me?

What did you do for the brake rod?

dont quote me ...67-68?

the singke line is dangerous...a friend was going up hill wheeling and lost his brakes...rolling backwards at about 30 mph till it hit a tree...not a pretty rig after that

Why didn't he pull the parking brake? ...or shut the engine off?

PB didnt stop it...i guess it needed adjustment

i dont think he had the time to try that also...he was too busy dodging trees and hearing his kid laughing...he was only 4 at the time i think...it was a matter of seconds...its amazing how fast they get up to speed rolling down hill...he must have had a backwind also :)

I don't know about the back wind...but things can really get out of control fast ...glad no one was hurt.
