So I'm just about certain about getting a GX in my area.

Lexus quoted me $1625 for the 180k maintanence which is timing belt, water pump, filters, balancing, and rotation. Should anything else be done?

Also, premium or regular. It's the VVti which I've heard people use regular with no problems.

My brother and I both run regular with no issues. I suspect you'd get 6-10 more hp running premium, but how often do you run the truck flat-out?

What year? I know my 2003 owners manual says regular fuel and I run regular.

I buy my own parts on amazon and take them to an Indy mechanic. The oem Aisin Tkt-021 water pump kit that includes the oem mitsuboshi (not a misspelling) timing belt is $175 plus tax on amazon.

Labor at Indy mechanic like $300, so you could do timing belt and water pump for like $500...but that’s how I roll.

the other stuff should be under $200 combined, so $700 total would be my target repair costs at Indy mechanic.

03 and 04 used a non variable valve timing, non secondary air injection system, marginally lower compression engine. Those owners manuals recommended regular gas. 2005 had the upgrade to variable valve timing (VVTI), SAIS, and a slight bump in compression ratio. The owners manual for 05 still said regular was fine.

This same engine was used in the tundra and 4 runner and all years of those vehicles with the 2zz engine said to use regular. For 2006 model year the Gx470 owners manual and fuel filler were changed to say premium. However, 2006 was the year that OEM's had horsepower calculated a slightly different way which have rated horsepower go down. There is speculation that the premium recommendation was to try to get closer to the rated power output.

The engines have knock sensors and if they detected knock they do dial back timing. There is also speculation that the GX and only the GX has a slightly different ignition timing table to try to get slightly more power.

Either way, I use regular in my 06 GX and it has been fine so far. I bought it at 111k miles and it presently has 120,500 miles.

That was helpful.
Thank you.

I just picked up a 2006 with 85k miles. Running Regular no problem. V8 got more power than 5th gen v6 so no complaints!
