Just got a set of 305/16's MTR's on rock crawler steelies and have a shacky steering wheel at 40-45MPH, got'em rebalanced today, tire shop added weight to the outside rim. Didnt fix the prioblem.. Any ideas....

Possible bent rim. Possible deformed tire. Possible incorrect balancing. Possible incorrect wheel alignment. That's just a few ideas off the top of my head.:)

I have seen a number of wheels that were not true, including stock Tacoma steelies. Also, MTRs can be a bitch to balance. Ask me how I know....

Try getting them to a shop that will balance them on the vehicle.

ON the vehicle, Can this be done...

Thanks Runner, and the rims are new but cheap thoug, tires were checked for a second time about roundness, were ok, balanced twice in a 4 days period. tire shop said rims cause the problem. The guy want me to bring over 2 stock alloy wheels to mount a test the mtr's on them, just to prove the tires are good, might do that next week

You could find a tire shop that has a Hunter balacing machine that has the Road Force Balacing capabilities. The Hunter Road Force Balancing is the best out there, but it cost $$$. I would guess that you will spend about $40/wheel to balance them.

The other option is to try something like Innovative Balancing's Dyna Beads. Dyna Beads have worked well with the MT/R's in the past.

A question for you. Which Procomp wheels did you get? Did they clear the brake caliper? Please let me know if you had to do anything to make them fit (i.e. spacers).

Ill make some calls to find out a tire shop with that Hunter Force machine, and about your question, not sure if this wheels are Procomp, bought 'em from wheelers offroad, invoice said item # PCW 87-6883 S3 16x8 6 on 5.5 and 4" BS. Wheels clear brake caliper, no spacer required..

Thanks! I've got the same wheels & tires on order (they are Procomp wheels). Glad to hear they fit fine. Good luck with the balancing. I am going to run the Dyna Beads. Wheel weights and offroad don't mix -- the weights always get knocked off.

you can get weights taped to the inside of the wheel. i have had great luck with this.

there are mixed reviews on the beads for balancing. everyone might want to search the various forums for info and opinions.

If you get the same wheels and tire size (4" BS) I did, expect the tire go over an inch out the fender line..I kinda think is too much, wider stance is nice though

Do you think there is sufficient space between the upper control arm and the backside of the tire to go with a 4.5" BS wheel .vs the 4 BS wheel and still fit the 305 on without rubbing the control arm?

Dude its the TIRES..........as bad as it sounds MTR's suck for balancing.......Goodyear has had lots of problems getting the molds right.........what you have is called a lateral imbalance on the tire(s) that have wieghts on the inside and outside of the rim.......what sucks even worse is there is no cure to fix a lateral imbalance.........my roommate has 37" MTR's on a cherokee and all but 1 had this problem.

I've had 2 sets of MTR's (2 diff sizes) and they balance fine. In fact one wheel doesn't even need any weights at all right now.

I know heavier tires are harder to balance, as I've had it redone b/c they rushed and didn't zero it out. I have heard balance complaints before but I think much might have to do with the guy doing the balancing... JMO, as I have had good luck w/ MTR's.

Yes, 4.5" BS will clear UA using 305/16, I have an inch an 1/4 gap between tire and UA. ...

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. Good luck with your balancing problem. I will probably get the Dyna Beads in November. I try to remember to post up again.

I've also had diffrent sets of MTR's. The 33's on my FJC have balanced fine. I had 37's on my 4Runner, and I didn't even bother to balance them. They were as smooth as glass. My 38.5" Swampers, on the other hand.......
I wouldn't recommend balancing beads for a daily driver. You have to be going a certain speed (above 60kph) before they actually start doing anything. Anything below that, and they won't help balancing.
I have done this with my Swampers. It sure helps, but it still isn't 100%.

I just switched out the BBS wheels that came with my FJ for a set of MotMetals. I was getting wheel shake from 50 thru70mph. One of the tires was using about 8 ounces of weight to balance. The tire shop deflated that tire and re-indexed it on the rim, then rebalanced with 3 ounces, and that solved the problem.

Thanks, Ill try that, might get lucky

I've got 16x8 rockcrawler wheels 4 1/2 backspace from wheelers warehouse w/ 285/75 16 and @ 45-55 mph my steering wheel also shakes but I'm use to it now.

What tires are using?... And I just rotated front driver tire to back driver side, drove around for a few minutes and seems like the annoying shake faded noticeable,...
