With a 16" wheel it seems the tie rod end could run inside the wheel, allowing for a deeper backspacing. Anyone done or seen this? Dangers?

A local buddy had a pair of 16" wheels made up wit 2.5" BS. I am going to test my theory by turning his wheels around backwards and dry fitting them just to see if they would fit. If they will I don't see why I couldn't run a 16 X 8 with 4" backspacing, unless there is a problem with the tie rod rubbing.

Yep. Trying to confirm the bet agent orange made here. Other than that, I haven't seen anyone discuss this idea.

When your tires are stuffed up towards the truck off road they need to "tuck" into the wheel well. A wider tire on a rim with deeper backspacing will be closer in towards the truck and wont want to tuck into there because there isn't room. Pushing the width out towards the outside of the truck (like your 2.5 backspaced wheels will do) solves this problem because there is less tire in the wheelwell and more tire oustide the wheelwell where it can't hit the truck.

I am wanting as much of the tire as possible to be closer to the truck.

I tested fitted my 16x8 American Racing Mohave 0 offset 4.5 backspace upfront and on the rear a couple of days ago, because I'm also trying to find a 16x8 rim with about 3.75 or less backspacing and so far no luck. Mine needed about 1/2 spacer up front clear the tie rod. Sofar my searching has found American Eagle 101b 16x8 that has about 3.625 backspacing with some negative offset, Theoritically they should work. I just didn't like the style. if you have anyluck send me a pm or post it up. Next phone call is to a have some custom made, see what qoute I can get.

Why do you want the tire closer to the truck if tuck is the issue? I must not be understanding something in your paragraph. These two statements seem to contradict each other:

1. A wider tire on a rim with deeper backspacing will be closer in towards the truck...Pushing the width out towards the outside of the truck (like your 2.5 backspaced wheels will do) solves this problem....

2. I am wanting as much of the tire as possible to be closer to the truck

Wouldn't the second statement reduce your tuck?

just trying to grasp this.

Hijacker. ;p

I am not that worried about tuck. I don't care if my tires rub the wheel wells twice a year when the tires are stuffed, as long as they don't tear up sheet metal. If my tires rub really bad I will do more lift later on. My main goal is to get as much tire under there so that the tires aren't sticking out throwing mud all over the side of the truck all the time.

Now back to my thread...

S&S1stCruzer, I am going to call Stockton today and ask some more detailed questions about their custom wheels. I'll let you know what I find.

What part of the edge of the wheel was hitting the TRE? I was sure they would fit? I'm gonna test Barry's on my truck later this week.

.

sorry. now i get it. mud. It's the mud under the truck thats really hard to clean.
end of hijack.

see ya.

Matt, great info there. If you have time, will you measure the exact backspace? If yours are really close to 4.5" BS I am thinking an 8" width with 4" BS would probably clear.

I took this pic the same day I took the others, I thought it was posted in the other thread.... I'm not exactly sure where you measure to when your talking backspacing but from the mounting surface to the outer edge of the rim it is 4.75", if you go to the rim seat it is about 4.5". Hope this helps.

Matt

Yeah any info would be great - I went to stocktons site I just didn't see anything that was appealing to the eye - unless they have some stuff offline that they offer. Lets us know

Thanks

Hey Greg,
Talkin out my you-know-what here.........but, it seems that someone like Luke at 4X4 LABS could hook you up with some new steering arms that would come off the knuckle in more of a straight line, then a shorter Tie rod and you might be able to run any rim you want, and get upgraded steering to boot.

Good Luck

Good idea kevin. I'll look in to it.

Greg,

I think you saw the wheel-tire combo on my 62 in Jackson last year. They're 16" cheapo alloys from Discount Tire with 4" backspacing and they do rub the TRE's without spacers. The little 0.25" disc style spacers provide sufficient TRE clearance but reduce the available thread for the lug nuts. I ended up using 1" Marlin Crawler bolt-on spacers. My 33" tires (285x75's) are still tucked inside the wheel wells, even with 1" spacers. Although that wouldn't be the case with your 37's. I don't think one can make a blanket statement concerning 16"/4" BS wheels and whether or not they'll rub, as the wheel designs differ from one manufacturer to another. In my experience some will rub and some won't, even with the same nominal backspacing. You've gotta do a test fit to be sure.

I just called them also, said unless it was SOA or they knotched out the oil pan, it would make the handling worse.

Test fit went well. 3.75 it is. I was thinking that the 16 wheel would be big enough to tuck the TRE up in there, but you'd have to run 20's to do that and MMW got rid of his 62, so oh well I guess we won't be seeing that setup. :grinpimp:

So now I gotta find a pair of 16X8 with 3.75" BS that I like. Or 4" BS with a sliver spacer like Lee uses.

Thanks for the help. Thanks to barry for loaning me his super cool wheels. Mountem up, lets see them!
