I've searched around and found some other forums reviews on the issue, what are the thoughts from the Mud folks?

How's the 5th gen 4runner towing? I've got a sailboat that weighs about nothing - 1000lbs, and I'd love to tow my fj40- say 5,000lbs including trailer. Is the 5th gen up to the task?

What seems odd is that the 5th gen is rated the same as my current 3rd gen. I'd think it should tow a lot better. I've towed my fj40 with my 3rd gen and it's too heavy. I've also towed an ASV tracked skid steer that had to be around 8-10,000lbs with trailer - not the best idea... but it worked. - I do have airbags under the rear of my 3rd gen which helps some although I would be very leery to do it again.

I tow only about 2600#...and don't even know it's back there for the most part.

Head over to www.t4r.org and search "towing" in the 5th gen section...there's a chit load of variations that'll probably shed some light on your questions

I'd say for shorter trips you'll be OK. However you are already over the towing capacity of the 5th gen which is 4700 lbs. Don't forget when your towing you want to use the 20-30% rule. So really in order to safely tow 5,000 lbs you are looking at a vehicle that can tow @ 6,500 lbs.

Can you do it? Sure. Are you going to damage your 4Runner long term? Probably. It could also behave very poorly on mountain passes and strong winds.
