How do some of you fit 15" wheels on an 80 that originally came with 16" wheels?

Searching would answer your question but I'll save you the effort.....

15 inch wheels will not clear the rear brake calipers without grinding material from the caliper bodies.

I guess that is why Mr T chose to supply rear disc-equipped 80's with 16 inch wheels.

I may recall this incorrectly, but didn't the first year or 2 come originally with 15"? If so, maybe those are the 15" you hear about?

I think the only ones that ever came with 15" wheels were rear drum brakes. Once the change was made to discs, the 15's were gone.

Edit: Ok, that's exactly what CDan said, man, I need to learn to read first...

However you *can* run 15" wheels on any year, you just have to space them far enough out. I test fitted a 15x10" steel wheel I had, it has 3-5/16" back spacing, it fit fine in the front, was VERY close to the caliper, but did not rub fully torqued down. It did however rub in the rear on the caliper, would need about 1/4" less back-spacing to clear, so around 3" back spacing should clear all the way around, puts the tires way out there compared to stock however.

Good Luck...

A search on the topic will also bring up threads regarding load ratings of 15" tires vs. 16" tires. Something else to consider.

I ground down my rear calipers to fit 15" rims... That being done, i wouldnt reccomend it. If you can get 16"s do it. I had to take off about 1/2 of metal off the top, and it caused the slider pin on the caliper to lock up. So... go with 16's unless you've got a 91 or 92 with drum brakes... those came with 15"s anyways.

Hi all.
I put some 15's on my 94, with rear drum brakes, The front calipers had a slight "shick" sound going down the road, I think its a bit to close, I took them off and noticed there was a bit of rubbing only on part of the inner wheel, Isnt there suppose to be a little room for cooling/air flow?
BTW I had some nice poser pick's...35" tires and no lift! Oh and it only slightly rubbed the outer part of the front bumper, I think 16's would be best...or even bigger.
Good luck

I'm just trying to figure out why the hell you would want to do that.

a friend of mine built a buggy with a FZJ80 rear axle he ground the rear calipers to clear 15" rims, he did it as so he could have wider tire selection, the rear calipers held but I still don’t like it, at least that one will never be on the highway

Raven, thanks for the info. Just couldn't think of a reason myself why anyone would want smaller rims.

Wider tire selection as mentioned, but also cheaper prices on the same size tire(price a 33x12.50 R15 GY MTR and a 305/70 R16 GY MTR and see what you come up with ;) )

This also a good point which had not occured to me. I just like my 80 on its 16s and kinda belive the bigger the junk the better. :bounce:

$192 vs $155 comes out to $37/tire not enough to weaken your brakes over IMO. also unless you have 15" wheels sitting arround you will have to buy a set that negats any savings and then some,

Well the original poster asked if the would fit. If they were able to fit he wouldn't be weakening his brakes. Additionally you can often find lightly used wheel/tire combos in 15" wheels that are very cheap. Whereas the same type of situation with 16" wheels is harder to come by and more expensive.

But, I guess if $144 is not a concern for you, then it's a moot point.
