We're pleased to announce an addition to the 2018 Crawl. on Saturday October 13th we will be offering a day trip "Overland" style up to the Ouachita National Forrest. We will leave the park at 9:00 am and will plan on being back ~4:00 pm so we have a few hours incase anything goes wrong to make it back in time for dinner and the raffle.

Plan to be gassed up and ready to go. Pack a lunch/snacks/whatever you need for the day.

Requirements for the day trip:
Toyota vehicles only
Working 4wd
All Terrain tires are strongly suggested (or MT, highway tires may be fine, but we reserve the right to ridicule you).
Street legal - we will be on highways to and from the national forest

Optional:
Expensive Pants
Drones
Skottles
Fancy Coffee Makers
Hammocks
Roof Top Tents
Overland Trailers
Instagram accounts
YouTube accounts

There is no fee for the Overland Trip and Crawl registration is not required for participation.

Depending on the number of people interested we have two routes in mind. If there's enough people we'll split into groups and organize vehicles based on their capability. One of the routes won't require 4wd and basically anything will be able to do it.

@theBROfessor has graciously jumped in with intel on the local area including GPS tracks in GAIA and will run the lead vehicle for the group as there can be road closures etc. in the forest and he’s spent a lot of time in the area.

We’ll have a variety of Comms options, we’ll prefer GMRS frequencies but will have CB available as well. I’ll be bringing a couple of spare hand held GMRS radios so hopefully we’ll have enough dispersed through the group to stay in contact on the highway.

If you are planning on taking part in the Overland day trip please post below and I will add you to the list. Also list your preference for the planned route or the regular vehicle friendly Winona Auto Tour. This will help us know if we’ll need to split into groups. We’ll do our best to accommodate walk ups etc. I really don’t want to end up with groups of 20 or something because we didn’t know the level of interest.

Toyota vehicles only

I'm contemplatin' a sight-seein' day while I'm there for the event this year but I ain't gonna be in a Toyota vehicle. And I know Toyota folks hate jeeps.

No desire to derail this here thread so maybe some of y'all with local knowledge could PM me some National Forest spots in the area that are worth visitin'? Be much appreciated.

Carry on.

Yeah. I got your GPS tracks. No sweat. I spend a lot of time in those woods. I’d love to show you some stuff.

I think the main points of the Toyota deal are two-fold.

One. Photos.

Two. So it does not become a tow rig tag along.

You will have a bunch of folks that want to go that do not do the Mud thing. I know of 2 right now that will want to tag along. An FJC and a 4Skinner. Neither do Mud but are registered.

I am in for sure.

I'm thinking we'll probably put a sheet out at the registration table or something. Just want to try and get in the right order of magnitude to be sure I've got people lined up that can lead without us doing the MC thing on the highway with a huge group.

We will have 4 opportunities to address this on the PA as well. Hope to have 2 drivers meetings and during the bands Thursday and Friday nights.

I don’t mean to be a downer but Have you checked with the usfs on this? they have pretty strict rules on using the forest for profit events... just sayin... ya might wanna check that out if you havent already. There may be a permit needed for this type of event within the nat forest, there have been a couple guys I know of running overland trips for profit into the forest that were forced to stop. I think the overland event last October ran trips out into the Ozark NF without the usfs approval and were “ seriously talked to” a few years ago a guy was even running trips looking for Bigfoot until the usfs shut him down. if you can avoid all that up front it would be best.

I talk often with the USFS Winona District and it’s not a problem. They love us coming since we take care of the area and pick up tons of trash.

I talk with the usfs as well and visit the regional office here in town and I spend as much time wandering and picking up trash etc as possible, but mainly in the ozark districts , I just know that for profit events are prohibited, I just wanted to make folks aware of that fact and maybe modify the structure somewhat to fit that fact or get the proper approval....... carry on :)

What qualifies as a Recreation Event? A recreation event is any temporary event, such as race, run, ride, or tournament, which is organized, using National Forest lands and facilities, and which an entrance fee is required to participate. Event proponents may be for-profit or not-for-profit, individuals, or organizations

There's no fee involved for this trip.

Cool deal , I figured you had checked into it ... I sent some info to Andy on it as well, that differs a little from that. With this quote,

“Any organized event/group needs a permit (depending on size for non-profit). But definitely all for profit events is required for permit with a fee also insurance is required.

Hot Springs phone number to the Supervisor Office is 501-321-5259 - Bud Ashmoore can help direct you to the person that will help get the type of permit need.”

I’ll drop it , but just didn’t want anyone in trouble. Thanks, Dave
