By BJ 74 has developed a shutdown problem over the past few weeks it has taken progressively longer to shut down when turning off. I realize the shut off is accomplished with a butterfly vane activated by a vacuum modulator. This appears to work fine as it moves full swing on shut down. The engine idles on at a few hundred RPM with a terrible smell and smoke of improperly burnt and un-burnt diesel even when I move the actuator manually to full stop position, it just keeps sputtering on. I put the vehicle in Drive and the engine finally quit !. I figure that for this to happen either the butterfly is bent out of shape and wont fully close, or there is air coming in somewhere past this location? ( throttle body heater assy, intake manifold )

Has an one else had this problem?

I believe you can also use the "full load stopper" to shut the engine down. It's a lever on the side of the IP just ahead of the boost compensator. Just look and reach down over the batteries and push it forward.

Check for inlet manifold leaks after the butterfly, must be getting air somewhere.

Check the vacuum hoses, tightness of the manifold bolts etc.

You can try spraying volatile solvents around while the engine is idling and listening for the change in engine note.

Most likely it's your shutdown VSV... have had a few of these go wrong lately with our clients vehicles.

We have some on order from Japan.

Ah, just re-read your post a bit better as I was distracted when I first looked at it. It sound as though you may have a leak in your intake system - gaskets, loose manifold - that kind of thing. The butterfly can be checked easily enough. Check for leaks around the intake manifold would be my first suggestion.

Thanks John, and others who replied, I think your all confirming what I pretty much thuoght, AIR getting in somewhere past buterfly. Also good to know that there is a full stopper lever on the pump, that was easy to find on the 60's but this engine is a little more compact ! I dont like the feeling of not being abel to stop a motor, strange as that may be. The problem got progresively worse from takeing a few seconds to shutdown, to 5 to 10 seconds, to not shutting down, this over the course of about 2 weeks. ( yes I know, I should have looked at it earlier, but this is fun off road season here in Ontario, our season is not like you guys in BC ! so time to play not fix )

I finally had time to look into this issue this weekend, the problem was the intake manifold bolts were loose, ( some almost a turn.) So this appears to be enough to let a 13Bt engine breath on.... I am amazed that the engine could get enough air in to allow her to burn any diesel at all !

Once all tightened up, she stops inmediately on turney off key

Again thanks for the imput
