In the middle of going up a hill my BJ74 started to miss and sputter a little. Then about a minute later it stalled out. It fired right up but as soon as I put it in drive (auto) and hit the accelerator it stalled out again. I repeatedly restarted it with no problems but it would stall out every time i'd try to go. At first I thought it was a fuel issue so I drained the water separator and emptied to fuel filter and bled the air out but it didn't improve. I ended up having to get a tow back to camp, but what I thought was odd is that my truck would idle fine in N but as soon as my buddies truck started to pull me, I would stall out again. Got back to camp and another buddy who had a little experience on diesels pulled off this vacuum line (see attached pic) and it ran and drove no problem but I had to re-connect it to shut down cruiser. I'm pretty sure this is an easy one for some of the guru's out there, but I'm stumped. I searched the forum and came to the conclusion that it may be a VSV but I'm not 100%. Anyone else have any ideas, or better yet, parts #'s?

Oh, also worth noting, my truck was not starting very well all weekend. It took 10-15 seconds worth of cranking to fire up every morning with lots of smoke and missing until it warmed up a little. When I fired it up to take it off the trailer when I got home, with the vacuum line off, it fired right up.

One other thing worth mentioning, I had just completed a head gasket job on this truck, but I'm pretty sure everything was done ok because I had no issues on my several test drives around town or on the trails until sunday.

Thanks or the reply. By air intake I assume you're referring to the air filter? If so, its new. Any other suggestions? I really wanna hit the trails soon with all this rain we've had so I hoping to get this one figured out soon.

Cool, probably a buggered VSV then (vacuum service valve) or electrical connection to the valve or the valve itself on the intake manifold.

Check the vacuum lines are good and tight, trace back to the VSV and check the wiring and with a multi meter that it is working when it should be etc. I had a valve fail awhile back.

The valve on the engine, underneat is a rod coming out to the intake flapper, when you try to move this there should be a reasonable amount of spring resistance.

I suspect your VSV valve is probably jammed partially open and letting some vacuum in all the time.

I suspect hustly is spot on the money. Your shutdown vsv is letting partial vaccum through and when rpm increases it pulls the butterfly shut

hello my name is bill sorry if iam useing the wrong forum, can any one tell me why my oil pressure is so high at cold start up it goes srtaight up to 80lbs when hot it drops to 65, when idle it is at 40lbs , i have been told this is to high , also my 13bt turbo rebuilt is boosting out to 20psi, again im told it shoul only be 10psi , what is the correct oil pressure and the correct boost for my 13bt, also i have lost tourque it wont pull up the hills any more , when i got this engine it use to make you giddy when driving it , it whent like a rocket pulled unreal up hills with ease, pump redone ,inj new , pump timimmin spot on , engine is enclined to move up into the over heating line . runs ok in the cool night , can any one please help , i have had this issue for several years now ,and is costing an arm and a leg , regards bill

Hi Bill, you should make your own thread, here or in the diesel section.

Oil pressure sounds fine, mine is 100psi cold start, 40ish psi hot idle, 70-80psi hot running. If it is a stock turbo boost is probably a little high, wind it back to around 16psi. I have a modded turbo on mine running 20-25psi. What are you EGT's like? what size exhaust? I assume to get the boost that high you have a boost T or similar connected to the wastegate? Probably just needs a good tune up.

high oil pressure/turbo boost high

hello thank you for the reply, the exhaust is 2,3/4 inch ct 26 toyota turbo fixed factory actuator rod attached no adjustment to set,i have just got hold of a workshop manuel and oil pressure is about 40lb to high and can run the risk of blowing of the oil cartridge, have shorten the oil pressure relief valve spring witch has brought the high oil pressure down, the high oil pressure was causing leakage around oil lines and oilfilter, how can i adjust turbo boost please , regards bill, than you,

Got it! Thanks to all who replied. In the process of removing the VSV to test it, I discoverred a broken wire at the plug that connects to the VSV. It must have cracked and broken at some point during the head gasket job I did recently. I guess in the future it would be wise to handle the 25 year old wiring a lot more carefully then I did. Lesson learned! Thanks again, especially Hulsty.
