I am rebuilding a 12HT and fully intended putting it into a FJ62, but the missus has recently put her bum into an 80, and likes the more modern approach. They also seem more available in non rusted petrol from here in SA.
What would it take to marry the engine to a manual 80 gearbox?
Bellhousing?
Clutch and lever?
What gearbox would the 80 use, by the way.( not the h55f??)
Wireing and mounts are no problem to me, I worry more about the expensive things like cooling and adaptor plates.
Is there any way of keeping all the components OE.
Is there such a thread on this forum? I only found a 12Ht to auto box thread.

All this because diesel 60's and 80's are either very rear here, or the owners hang on to them.
Looking forward to at least considering an 80 as a suitable vehicle for this great engine.
Regards. G

OK, done a wee bit of research SO, let me rephrase my question in the hope of getting a quick GO/NO-GO answer.
Is there a bellhousing, OE or after-market to mate a 12HT engine to a H151F gearbox??
( H151F is the 80's manual gearbox? Right)
regards
George

Not that I know of or heard of.

The 12H-T never got an H150/151. It was only ever mated to the A440F auto box and the H55F 5 speed manual tranny.

The bellhousings for the H151 and the H55 are different.

Cheers Beno
Kind of what I was thinking after a bit of my own research.
I guess it would be the same problem mateing an 80's transfer case on to an H55F??
If I did go the 80 route I would want to keep the permanent 4 wheel drive.
Thoughts??

making a HF*A* t-case ( 80 series family cases ) to a H55F ( BF1A case ) would be the real deal .. they share like ... mmm nothing !

If you have access to designing machine shop, an adapter plate, tranny side from 12H-T manual bellhousing to a H15* tranny would be the easiest route to take.

Or just keep the hole 12H-T manual drivetrain and make it work in your 80 frame .. H55F it's and awesome tranny .. far beter than those H15* trannys ..

Ja, in this case it would have to be an almost plug and play solution, (obviously with some hard work thrown in) which is clearly not going to be the case here.
Question, are all 80's permanent 4wheel drive. I have seen some pics with free wheeling front hubs, Are these all conversions? if not, then what g-box and tx case would these vehicles have.
Any 80's here running around with H55F's and split tx cases?? be good to chat.

Tapage knows of someone who has one but my understanding is that the bellhousing and adapter were custom.

yup .. local guy made custom " welded " bellhousing adapter .. I post a pic not so long ago here ..

Genghis:
What engine do you have in the 80 currently?
I don't have an 80. I have the 12 HT engine and am about to pull the trigger on a FJ62, but then the missus took a look at the 80, so just thinking out loud with the help of my friends here.
If there was a quick easy way, I would certainly consider the 12ht/80, but the 60 seem the way to go. bell-houseing and clutch parts are OEM.

Unless there are any other bright ideas out there.

I vote for 12HT- H55- split case for 62> 80 chassis, custom driveshafts...maybe mounts, done. post pics.

Working on this swap myself. It can be done with a hj61 drivetrain from what I have seen its been dome on this forum a few times.
