@funk, or anyone
Where do you think prime location would be to mount tweeter?
I think putting it in place of the dash speaker would easily be the most "stock" looking, but I'm worried about sq, which is most important to me. The fact that they would be facing down at your knee seems troublesome!

I was thinkin of placing them on the door, at the uppermost panel slightly pulled back so that they are not blocked by the dash.
Other option is the corner of the door over that black panel?

Last option was a-pillar, but i've heard that its best to place the tweeters closer to the woofer so that may not overpower the mids. Plus I assume that it would cost more to route them that way?

thanks again!

Yeah, don't have them pointing at your knees. I have mine on top of the dash in the corner by the a pillar. I like it because they are basically pointing right at my face. The tweeters from the coaxials are also pointed up as much as they can, and I have a center speaker, too. It gives it an nice full sound. Does your deck have time alignment? It helps to balance everything out

@funk: I assumed you would say that, planning on placing them in the sail panels so they will be close enough to the woofers, but also minimize the "obviousness" of them, to prevent theft. The 3200bt does have the "time" control as you mentioned.

Planning on doing the build next week (well, having someone do it).

Do you all recommend dynamat? I def. notice a rattle from the rear hatch given the sub I have, so I will plan on fixing this via the dynamat.
But do you guys notice a benefit with this? Is it worthwhile to install this sound deadening material? Should I expect a decrease in road noise if I place these in a door?

Finally, on amazon 4 sheets of dynamat at $50, 9 sheets bulk at $120.
Would your recommend two 4 sheet sets to fill the car? Or is this entirely unnecessary?

thanks again everyone, YOU ALL rock

Sound deadening isn't a really cost or time effective way to improve the sound of your stereo, but there is really no replacement for it. It will reduce vibrations and increase the "luxury feel" of your car. Dynamat is a great product but overpriced. I bought deadening sheets locally. I ended up using about 10 square feet per door.
I have read threads about people having success with the deadening from cruisercrap.com. I made the mistake of not putting in a sound insulator/absorber in at the same time, so now I have to open it up again. The deadening will reduce vibrations and stop your panels from making extra noise, but the absorber will actually block noise that is already there (outside noise)

@funk
So do you think it will be worthwhile? Since I'm getting the complete install all the panels will be open, its really now or never!
Just not sure the benefits, I do notice a rattle in the rears, so maybe just do it there? But I figure with an outboard amp and new speakers in the doors that there might be rattle, just worried, and if I'm gonna do it, its gotta be now.
thanks bro

I'm glad I did it. It's messy and time consuming, but there's really nothing else you can do to achieve the same effect.

where do you guys have your amps placed?
I currently have my sub amp in the right rear cargo area, on the wall. Looks very nice, and allows the 3rd row seats to come down if I need.

For the 4 channel amp am thinking of placing it in the left rear cargo area, however there is that storage space there that may pose some problesms, so where would you rec. placing the 4 channel amp?
At this point, the 3rd row seats are removed and honestly will not be using them in the future.
thanks again!

I have all my amps on the box for the 2 12s right behind the second row. I don't have the 3rd row.

I have my 350 watt amp mounted under the driver's seat, where I can run the seat all of the way forward and access the controls, which are mounted on the top. I will be placing my second amp in the stock sub-woofer location.

Price for install?
So got a quote today, 450-500$ More than I expected, but I know this person does top notch work, custom installations, charges about 55/hr. I have purchased the wiring and dynamat myself.

The install would be for component DB in the front, with tweeter custom mounted flush in either sail panel or on the running door panel. Dynamat in the 4 doors and trunk. Amplifier mounted on the left rear side wall so it would sit flush with that wall. And a capacitor.
Know that the speakers won't just fit in and will require some dremel and spacer work, does it seem like a fair price?
thanks!

i just installed these 2 weeks ago along with a alpine cde-122 with the 6.5 speaker and it is night and day! sounds just better than the bose speaker system in my 350z! well worth every penny i even bought it from the same ebay seller!

Reviving this thread rather than start my own. I finished installing these in the front doors of my '80 tonight.

My impression? They are boomy, with a pronounced midbass hump somewhere around 70hz and some midrange suckout to match. Had to EQ the bass down and the mids up.

I'm sure my eq settings will have to evolve over time but for the moment, using just Bonny Prince Billy's "Wolfroy goes to town" to test it, there was way too much going on in the "oontz oontz oontz" range, and way too little going on int he middle.

It's a bit like listening to a 3-way design that is missing the midrange speaker.

But unlike the terrible pioneers the PO installed in the rear doors and dash, they don't have harsh distortion around 5k, so at least i can EQ out their sins.

I have some 3" aurasound fullrangers that i was hoping would fit in the 3rd row headliner positions, but they don't. I may try installing the aurasounds in the dash positions with a little tripath amp for some midrange support.

I'm now going to have to shop around for something better for the rear doors as well.

OK, I feel compelled to follow up by saying that after the first several hours of use, the db651 do loosen up and even out a bit. I am only running 120hz 4db down now.

I'm also going with the DB651's, front and rear.

To the poster above, I hope I never have ears good enough to notice imperfections or the knowledge to recognize them if I do :)

Not saying that sound deadening is cost effective, but the stuff with the lead liner works well. Best car stereo I have enjoyed was the old lexus ls400, I believe because the car was so quiet, everything sounded clearer and less boomy. Don't have to adjust volume as much for road speed, and it seems like whenever I change the volume enough, I'm messing with the eq also.

I admit to being an audio snob.

I got some of the pioneer 6.25" (or were they 6.5?) to shoehorn into the rear doors but have not gotten to it.

I have boards to build a 100w x2 class-D amp that will be fairly small to drive the front doors and will be installing the above-mentioned aurasounds in the dash powered by the kenwood nav unit.
