Not necessarily a Toyota question, but I found a used 12,000 lb Warn winch for sale , mounted to a receiver hitch tubing arrangement.

I just used pretty much the same arrangement with a 9,000 lb Warn to keep my 1995 F-350, crew cab with 10.5 ft flatbed (fully loaded with ATV, dead elk and campnig gear) moving up a loose dirt hill with 18" snow while retreating from elk camp. Had to use a snatch block to make the recovery, as it stalled out on single line.

Question is, is a 12,000 winch viable and safe when used in a receiver hitch arrangement.

Used sale price is $900. Any thoughts?

10-Q!

what class and what is the towing capacity of the receiver?

Can't tell as its not marked where I can see it. Put on by Les Schwab tire store in Boise, specifically for winching. Does have a sticker that states "9,000 lb max winch line pull" which probably answers my question, but I expect there's a factor of safety of at least two times in that disclaimer. :meh:

Sounds like you already exceeded the 9K when the old winch stalled and you used a snatch block. Hope it works out.

I don't think so. No more than 9k on the stinger from the single line to the winch (whether doubled or not, if I'm thinkin' right), then the other 9k (if it experiences that much) on the receiver crosspiece at the hookpoint from the second line. Neither line exceeds 9k. The entire receiver assembly, bolted to the frame, could see up to 18k.

Am I thinkin' right? :hhmm:

Question remains, should I go another 33% capacity on the winch and exceed the manufacturer's disclaimer.

At the end of the day, I think NOT!

18K on the typical hitch is a lot...

Indeed. I'm pretty comfortable it didn't experience that kind of load. It survived with flying colors and after inspection, looks fine.

My original question about going to a 12k winch would potentially expose the receiver to up to 24K load. That is way beyond my comfort level!

Thanks for everyone's comments!

Heck, I'd be more worried about my back with a 12k winch on a receiver mount:mad::p
