I am trying to pick out a small welder that I can use for learning with and doing some light stuff on my cruiser with. I came down to these two welders...

Lincoln electric handy mig welder
Lincoln Electric Handy MIG Welder

Hobart Handler 140 mig welder

I like these two because from what I have read I think that I can use both of them with or without shielding gas. I really like the price of the lincoln one but I think I would need a kit to convert that to use the gas. What do you guys think? should I be looking at any others? Thanks

I bought the Miller (identical to Hobart) Not sure my model number since I got it a few years ago....

Dad uses it more than I do....I bought it so I could plug in to a regular outlet and move it where I needed it. I use gas...welded better than the shielded wire.

Both come with gas regulators (per your links). I'm sure either will be fine. And as Craig mentioned, Hobart is owned by Miller and uses many of the same components.

Small bit of advice. If there's any chance you may be doing more fab and welding in the future, think hard about getting a 220v unit. I started with a 110v then moved up to a 220v model (Hobart Handler 187 - Now $599 at Tractor Supply) a few months later and couldn't be happier. I run a 50ft extension cable to my dryer outlet. I just wish I had gotten the 220v first and not wasted my money on the 110v. Sold it for a 1/4 of what I paid.

What he said
You'll pay a little more for a 220 unit but if you want to do anything heavier that sheet metal you'll wish you had one. I have the Lincoln 220 and if I had it to do again I think I would buy Miller. It's welded fine since I got it but there are alot of plastic parts in the wire feed and the Miller's I've seen are all metal.
