For those here that are interested in a tropical/extreme condition equipped cruiser, I contacted TGS regarding importing one. In short, they will only sell to you if you belong to a charity group or aid organization. Here's my inquiry and their response. On the bright side, there is a company in the Netherlands (Euro Auto Brokers) that will sell the general spec 105 to anyone, but it's the most standard 10-seater version w/ rear barn doors and vinyl seats rather than the GX version w/ cloth seats, cost is around 27K Euros (about $34K USD at the weak dollar Euro exchange rate). All you have to do is put down a 33% deposit at order time and sign a statement saying it's for personal use only. But by the time one gets all the DOT mods necessary (new windows, airbags, DOT headlights) plus shipping, figure $10-15K extra, so more like $45-50K! ...cheaper to buy a used US-spec UZJ100...

Dear TGS,
Is TGS able to equip the HZJ105 with dual front airbags?

What is the price for a single HZJ105 GX? (please include the price with and without the following options:) dual batteries, in-line diesel heater, coolant pre-heater, turbo kit, spare parts and workshop repair manuals, gps vehicle tracking, TJM side steps, TJM rear bumper and left-side tire carrier, sea shipping to USA.

Thanks for that, Jim.

I once contacted TGS in an effort to get some non-U.S. spec parts, and did not even get the courtesy of a reply. They apparently are not set up for, nor have any real interst in dealing with individuals - particularly in the U.S. - as we are obviously not their market.

After the Land Cruiser is dead and gone from the North American market, I'm sure this will subject will recur with greater interest.

Cheers, R -

They are not allowed by Toyota to sell into the US or Canada . You would have to trick them. Not too hard I imagine. Get it delivered FOB to hamburg or rotterdam or something, then ship it yourself from there.

Europe Auto Brokers lists the basic hzj105 at http://213.186.37.98/tropical/en/list/4 . If you look under the documents section, you just need to sign a document saying it's for personal use and you have no intention to resell it. Unlike TGS, I don't think they care what you use it for. But you need to add a turbo to move those 5000 lbs of steel...130 hp just doesn't cut it driving on the interstate. At least you get spoked steel wheels. My feeling is, you buy the DOT lamps from a US dealer and have a toyota dealer in Europe fit them (can show the receipt to the DOT), but you keep the e-code (?) lamps yourself and reinstall them later. You can easily buy dashboards pieces, airbag steering wheels ($500) for 100 series vehicles in Japan.
