So I bought the Ironman4x4 recovery points for my LX470 after ensuring they were compatible (posted the question on the Ironman4x4 website) and being told they were compatible by the company, only to install them and find they sit about 1” too high. If I were to use them I would bend and possibly break my front bumper mount brackets. Waiting to see how their customer service takes care of this issue…

On to the more important issue… what is a good solution for front recovery points with the OE bumper? I eventually plan on installing the winch mount that hides behind the OE bumper. Not planning on getting a high clearance bumper, at least not in the near future. Any ideas?

No idea. I have Ironman recovery points on all 4 corners, stock bumpers and they’re fine. Maybe post a picture.

I had the front recovery point with a stock bumper before I replaced it with a Dissent bumper. The recovery points did feel a little hidden behind the stock bumper. When I asked about it a few years back, the general consensus was that in a real application it should work okay as long as you are not trying to pull from too high of an angle where the bumper could be damaged.

After I got the steel front bumper I added some steel plates to act as a spacer for the recovery points. You could do the same thing in your application to make it work better.

While I have run aftermarket recovery points on two of my UZJ100s, in hindsight they were pretty much bling-bling. Been recovering with stock fronts for over a decade now without issue. And, with most of our trucks >20 years old now, "the squeeze may not be worth the juice" with removing the OEM bolts. YMMV

Unless I installed them in the wrong place (is that even possible?) this is where they sit in relation to the bottom lip of the front bumper. Mind you this is a ‘99 Lexus LX 470… maybe the bumper skirt hangs lower than on a Toyota badged LC?

That seems quite a bit more concealed than I remember mine being. The installation location looks correct I think.

I wonder if I got sent the wrong ones? But the bolt holes match up… maybe the Lexus has a lower front skirt than the Toyota? Does anyone else have them installed with an OE bumper that can post a pic?

That’s exactly how they’re supposed to look. I had TT mounts and I switched to Ironman because they are lower and therefore have a better angle with the stock bumper.

But if I use these as they’re currently mounted a rope or strap will interfere with the lower edge of the bumper and bend or break the mounts. They aren’t functional.

Any lower would reduce approach angle and be inherently weaker 🤷🏼‍♂️

Sorry to tell you this but you didn’t fully understand what you were buying.

This thread has some pictures that help show the difference that I think exists.

This image from a 2006LX seems to show the bumper a bit higher than yours.

It’s hard to tell from that angle, but yeah you might be right. I wonder if Lexus designed the front bumper differently than that on the LC?

And to the other member’s comment about not knowing what I bought, it seems pretty foolish to design a recovery point that wrecks your bumper if it’s going to get used, yes? Anyone who’s actually done any serious off-roading knows that there are many scenarios where recovery points are used where your bumper is not already wrecked. The more you know. 😁

UPDATE:

After sending some pics and explaining the issue Ironman4x4 offered to refund the purchase amount and I told them I would pass them along to a fellow mudder as I will not be using them. Big props to Ironman4x4 and their customer service, and now I just gotta decide who to give em too…

I have bought several items from Ironman and they have always had fantastic customer service. Very easy to work with

This is the first instance I've seen of recovery points being used with the standard bumper in place, mine have good clearance with an East Coast alloy bar. I guess Ironman would expect that you're using their recovery points with their bar?

And here's how the points look with the Ironman bar:

It looks it’s installed correctly. I had my Ironman red recovery points installed even before I had my front Dissent bumper and yes I can confirm that it is a bit hidden behind the OEM plastic bumper. If you use that using a flat tow strap (thru a d-shackle) and get recovered, that strap will likely contact and bend the plastic bumper a bit but I’m pretty sure because it’s flexible it will return to original form.

As Lee said, Toyota makes some nice Tupperware. It’ll flex just fine.
