Hi Folks greetings from Ireland, first post here, I recently bought an 03 diesel 100 series with auto box. I love it. It’s developed a bit of noise underneath driving it, and a single metal tap noise when I floor it or lift off accelerator heavily. I left it to a garage to service it and grease up all drive shaft nipples and fill slip yolk. They tell me I have some something wrong in transfer case but didn’t grease the drivetrain like I asked, but anyway. Anyway they said there’s a problem with transfer case and it’s mega cost.

I’m going to grease drive train up and go from there. There’s no hesitation when I floor it or when changing down, there’s no noise when going from forward to reverse. I’m hoping it’s the slip yoke. What’s anyone’s thoughts ? All help is appreciated.

So the noise doesn't have anything to do with the engine right, you only hear it when in motion?

When you say metal tap, could it also be described as a 'clunk'.

I don't believe you have a problem with your transfer case unless you leaked all the fluid out and ran it dry or broke something inside.

That’s what I thought aswell. And if I did anything like that it wouldn’t be a clunk it would be crunch tbh I think.

The chap in this YouTube video describes it as best and you’re probably right calling it a clunk, but it’s the foot down gas and foot off gas clunk. I’m thinking grease slip yoke and shaft and of course mechanic didn’t bloody do it.

Roger that. Here are a few quick things you can check for if you are indeed chasing a driveline clunk and don't have a lot of technical skills

- Have someone lean down under the front of the truck and look at your CV axle where it meets the wheel hub. Shift from P-N-R-D and see if there is slop in that area. There is a good video here somewhere I will try to find

- If that checks out, well either way, you'll want to get your drive shaft U and Slip Joints lubed up. Sometimes the slip joint can be a bitch to pass grease through so you have to be careful about not expanding the shaft / putting too much pressure if the grease doesn't pass. The rear fittings is easy to get to and you could do it on your own. The front may require you to remove the splash shield which is also light weight and easy to do

- Differential bushings and some other components could be at play here but start with the previous suggestions

You may luck out and just need a good lube job on your shaft.........( thats what she said )

Damn the google search engine is powerful, way better than mud search. I just did " driveline clunk @2001LC video ih8mud" and it led me to the video I was hoping for

This is a quick easy check that is worth doing on your own....Next figure out a mechanic who will service your driveshafts and not say no for some unrelated transfer case reason lol. Don't even mention the clunk

I think it’s the lube up needed, the bushings are ok. Tomorrow I’m going to do it, mate has a lift if free il use all else fails il get under it till all jobs are done. I will let you know how I go.

Keep an eye on the driveshaft as you pump into the slip .....if it starts to push apart more than , idk, 2-3 inches, and grease isnt passing you may want to press the zerk and release grease/pressure and try again until it passes around seal

Folks got the wagon sorted, front cvs, hubs and 2 universal joints replaced and it’s knock free. Very happy, till 3 days later and first drive after, the front suspension up in the air and rear not low but slightly lower than normal with suspension hitting the bump stops.

Truck was lifted using a 2 post lift to be worked on. Height sensors are all intact and suspension not lifting or dropping when manually adjusting height with no warning lights. Thinking of ripping out the ahc to go springs but it’s expensive in Ireland to do it. Any ideas on the what or why? I’m wondering is the compressor kaput?
