I’m not a professional evaluator of spindles. How does this one look? The brownish area is smooth. Is the discoloration from excessive heat?

does emery cloth clean it up?
heat would be discolored, more of a blue color

Looks more like rust....
It's in the threads too.

It was weird. Kind of an orange goo. I bought the truck back in December. Wheel bearings had been run loose and had about 20K miles on them since dealer replaced them- also did front drive shafts at that time based on paperwork I had from seller. I pulled the front wheels last winter and adjusted bearings and greased spindles. Both sides had the same orange coloration. I cleaned them both up. They look great / smooth now. I suspect it was because the dealer that installed the front hubs didn’t do a good job sealing up the flanges and the dust caps looked like they were from the Civil War. I found I needed a new driver side hub in the process. One hub bolt was stripped out and the antilock brake sensor teeth had been mangled by a BFH. Always something.
