Can anyone recommend where I can get 10' expanding (internal sliding) metal canopy poles, with thumb screws or quick locking type. Looking for light and strong.

Thanks

The Crappy Tire ones need you to chuck the plastic knobs and tack weld some flat bar to a proper bolt. Apparently the knobs spin easily on the bolt.

Home Depot has both aluminum and steel telescoping poles which use a cinching collar. I picked up some inexpensive 'seconds' at my local Habitat for Humanity Restore store. They were from Home Depot and had the plastic hose connectors broken on them. I just wanted them for a tarp and for a telescoping camp/work light to mount on the tire carrier.

And the tallest (female) Pole....

Cabelas. We're raffling a couple with tarp and rope as a package at the BBQ next week. These are telescoping for their adjustable portion only, the remainder are cable-corded sections that slip together.

I've used mine for years and they work well.

I would suspect these are good quality BUT they all only have a 2' reduction from fully extended. For example the 10" only goes down to 8'- that does not help much??

So that tall (female) Pole is 7'2" so I guess she can reach another 3' for a total of 10' so I need two of them to stand outside my truck overnight hold my canopy while its raining.:hillbilly:

Do the 3Vets have anything worth looking at - there is one in Langley somewhere?

On second thought -- that was Army and Navy.

I got mine at Surplus Herbies, though they aren't quite that tall, I don't remember if they had longer ones. They're all steel and the screws have a loop on them so you can attach a bungie.

3 vets has only one location, downtown Vancouver. They carry the usual stuff and some extra goodies. There are about 4 more stores on Broadway in that neighbourhood that have camping gear as well.
You're pretty much going to find that there most stores will carry the basic 2 part "world famous" brand one or the "woods" one and that's it. Not very popular out here. If you want something else, online or make it yourself.
Could easily buy 3 sizes of aluminum tubing, and weld (or get someone) some aluminum nuts to it.

I will look at steel conduit - its thin wall, maybe too thinwall and I can weld it here. But I think someone bought some from somewhere - I saw on a trip.

Glenn, what you're likely to find at 3 Vets is one of these:

The one with the external collar seem to hold up much better than the one with the external nut. They're a bit harder to find - stock on them is not constant, or so it was when I was shopping for them.

I saw the ones on the right in your picture - all alum, with the collar US made to about 7', tapered eyelet top - they were $38 per pole.

Another option is MSR poles at MEC poles 7' to 8.5' - 3 piece alum. with internal shock cord - top section has adjustable internal slider. $42 per pole. They break down to 29", which is a short storable length.
Same deal at Wholesale Sports $49

Expensive. Not sure what to do.

I have one of the above mentioned Kelty adjustable poles - very sturdy and compact but pretty pricy. If you can live with being less compact, a cheap way to go is to get a few 10ft lengths of 1.5" gray plastic electrical conduit. Cut them in half, then by inserting a male-male section end into the female end of a male-female section, you have a nearly 10ft non-adjustable pole that stores in 5ft lengths. They are plenty strong for tarp structures, and are light - just bulky. They are not great for packing in the truck, but if I am using my Yakama skybox, a set of them fit in easily. I have drilled holes in them at various heights - with zap straps/ carabineers you have convenient hanging points for things under the tarp structure.
