hello Fellas, just notice some pinging sound when driving around 15-30 miles, no codes whatsoever 90K miles and all services done. the car is overseas and i am using 95 octane since brought it from US. its barely heard but annoying, gas here (Saudi Arabia) is either 91 or 95 octane, should i try the 91? what else could cause the pining? (am assuming from coil(s)

any suggestion/recomm is appreciated :)

Exhaust manifold maybe...try to check it on cold engine.
Will be easy if you will stand near the engine and your friend will close exhaust pipe with a hand, so you will see, where is the leak.
Or just use a smoke machine.

mass air and throttle was cleaned few months ago with no carbon at all. the odd thing is that i hear most cars here in Saudi Arabia pinging even the brand new one. i am 90% sure it has something to do with gas here. i have change gas from 95 to 91 and pinging slowly disappeared !!!

Could be they are lying about the octane rating. To find out put some octane booster in for a few tanks and see if the ping goes away.

R u sure it's pinging? Modern day ECU's with knock sensors will avoid it like the plague. Traditionally, toyota ECU's will flash the check engine light as indication that the ECU is 'hearing' pinging.

What driving condition (uphill, stead state, throttle position, etc.) are you experiencing the pinging at?

If it's really pinging, I'd pull the spark plugs and give them an visual inspection. You should be able to find evidence of it on the electrode/insulator. It's also possible that the plugs are bad and possibly the source of the pinging.

well i know i hear it when driving around 30 Miles on flat street next to wall or curbs, the sound is actually just like distributor(pinging) in the old cars. its barely heard when the driver's window is down.
i am trying to find out what causes it. car has been maintained very well and i know sparks plugs not due till 120K when mine has less than 100K. tried to pull out couple coils and they looked fine. !!!!! going crazy

i tried different gas station with 95 and it got little better, then i used the booster and pinging almost disappeared, does this mean i have to use the booster every time i fill her up? are there other options/better idea ?

Sounds like they don't put the stated amount of octane in the gas over in Saudi Arabia? Depending on how long it's been pinging you could have carbon build up causing even more pinging. Do they use unleaded gas over there? Take it to the dealer have them correct this problem and advise. You can't be the only driver having these issues??

Saudi (and much of the world) uses an octane rating system that differs to the US (R+M/2) system. Super premium 95 RON in Saudi is 89 or 90 in the US and 91 in Saudi is closer to US 87. So I think you'll need to run super premium (and maybe some booster) at a minimum to manage the preignition problem. I have no idea if there are regional differences in ECU firmware to accommodate knocking and fuel octane differences. I wouldn't think so, but you never know.
