Hi, I have an 05’ GX and it started grinding while going into park today. This is my typical stop and park process.

1. Complete stop and move transmission lever to neutral.
2. Move transfer case lever from high to neutral.
3. Move the transmission lever from neutral to park.

My grinding issue only arises when I go from neutral to park with the transfer case in the neutral position. Does anyone have any insight on this issue? I got the car less then a month ago.

Thanks!

I mean, why are you manipulating the transfer case at all?

It‘s only grinding because of the unnecessary shift of the transfer case to neutral, you shouldn’t be using the transfer case shifter for no reason.

I put the transfer case into A/T Park every time I park from the neutral position on my shifter. I’m not sure if you follow what I’m saying. I’ll have a video later.

Try turning off the engine before going into Park. Sounds like you may be flat towing? If not there should be no reason to move the transfer case into neutral. That disconnects your wheels from the Park location allowing the car to roll freely.

I put the transfer case in neutral when I park, but the transmission was grinding not the transfer case. The transmission grinds when I try to put the truck in park while the transfer case in the neutral position.

So the question remains "why do you put the transfer case in neutral?"
That disconnects the wheels from the transmission, allowing the car to roll whether in park or neutral. No need to do anything with the transfer case, leave it in high, put transmission in park.

I’m under the impression it still loads the transfer case and transmission while in park. I still use the e-brake/parking brake but I can stop but I’ve done the ladder since I got the truck and now the problem has surfaced and I’m just curious if the cause. I will post a video later tonight.

If you let the transmission settle in neutral and then set the e brake before park that would unload anything that needs unloaded.

Stop messing with the transfer case. Leave the transfer case in High and use the gear shift for park, reverse, drive.
You realized by putting the transfer case in N, the only thing keeping your vehicle from rolling is the parking brake?

I fully understand how it works and that it’s the only thing holding the car. I’m more worried about how I can’t go into park while the transfer case is in N. Lexus says the transfer case is operable while in park or N; however, I cannot use the transfer case while in park. So that’s the route of my issue not my parking habits.

I guess you need to take it to a dealer
You can either go to the dealer and spend $5k in repairs or stop using the transfer case lever unnecessarily.

I actually don’t touch the transfer case unless I’m off-road and need to go in 4Lo. Otherwise, transfer case stays in 4Hi. And you can park while high or low without touching the transfer case.

oh and mine doesn’t grind when I put transmission in N to switch the transfer case to either 4Lo or 4Hi. Try it that way, but don’t park while transfer case is in N.
