I have a pretty bad oil leak at the back of the engine and trans, definitely engine oil. For sure it was leaking from the rear cam plugs which I replaced, no longer leaking from valve covers or cam plugs/half Moon's. Can't figure out if it's the oil pan or rear main seal. Also could not find a good video or write up on how to remove oil pan or rear main seal on a four-wheel drive 3.4 2001 4Runner. Any links or advice on which is more common remain seal or oil pan reseal. TIA

you can use uv dye to verify where the leak is.
either way the trans has to come out for the rear seal, or the diff or engine has to come out for the pan.

Removing transfer case, transmission and front differential to do the rear main seal and oil pan reseal. Going to be doing the oil cooler seal at this time, so the only thing I would not be covering is the front oil pump to block, cuz it was not leaking at the front. Anyone do a front oil pump reseal for an oil leak? I have replaced the front cam and crank seals when I replaced the timing belt.

FYI, the rear main seal adapter was the main culprit. It was wet all the way around it, The seal itself was a little bit stiffer than the newer one, but it fit on to the crank snug. Also did the oil pan reseal along with oil cooler seals. While the trans was out, we replaced the front pump seal and rear output shaft seal. There was a little bit of transmission fluid when we split open the transmission from the transfer case, the front pump seal was still in good shape, we opted to replace it since we're already in there. After a 20 minute freeway drive, bone dry underneath.

MTB Tim probably has videos on the oil pan nightmare!
