Swinging from a vine.
Fellas, If there are any of you in or around Memphis that would be willing to help with a front axle rebuild it would be much appreciated. From reading about it, I feel that it is a job I could do myself, however, I'd love to have somebody helping that knew what they were doing. My biggest obstacle (outside of never doing it before) is probably a lack of space in my garage and a lack of some specialized tools.

I am willing to pay for your time. If anybody has interest in making a few $$$ helping a cruiser owner learn how to do this, please post up. Any weekend works for me.

If you want to drive it to my house. I'll help you out. I just finished a rebuild on my FJ62. Not that bad just really dirty.

Ben, I certainly appreciate the offer. I'm not sure where Calhoun, GA is, but I am certain that it is GA... quite the drive on an axle that needs to be rebuilt.

few weeks too late

I was there last month. Drove my 62 from Asheville to Memphis for the week.

I did my knuckles about 3 months ago....I thought it would be a tough job, but turn out to be fairly easy. Do you have a parts washer? That was the main tool I used.

I've been looking for a reason to come to Memphis. Are there any fj40's for sale in the area?

There was a sweet pristine Mustard Yellow 40 with the Old school steelies with hub caps that I saw for sale about 6 months ago, I am still upset with myself for not stopping to look at it... But by and large, Cruisers (at least of the non 100 or 80 variety) are scarce in Memphis. There are 2 other 62's that I see with some regulariy and a 40 that I see about once every other month, but outside of that... nothing.

No parts washer, no 54mm socket, no jack stands, no big brass hammer for the cone washers.... I have to do some shopping.

Calhoun is in North Georgia about 50 mi. south of Chatanooga on I-75. The reason for you coming here is I have all the tools to do the job already. Im not sure what condition your axel is in but I drove mine with a bad seal for about 2 years before I did my rebuild there pretty tough as long as you keep your fluids up and don't cease a bearing or damage your spindle. Other than that just make sure you get all your parts lined up and accounted for beofore you start otherwise you'll turn a weekend job into a longer project.

Pick a weekend and let me know. I'll talk to the wife, its been a few years since we've been to Beale St. Man, I miss sitting in BB Kings!! I have big hammer, but no socket. It would have been helpful....also check out the tech pages, I think its the birfield ones. They have a walk-through thats pretting indepth. I also have the repair manual.

The "longer project" is what I am scared of. If I can'd git er done in a weekend, It'd be the next weekend before I could get back on it... and it is my DD. I truly appreciate the offer and I may wind up taking you up on it. Map quest says 5 1/2 hours, so it is not as bad as I thought it was.

I'll also have to do a search for 40's for sale in the area. That might be the deciding factor on the 4.5 hour drive...

TCB-

I'm in Memphis, and I just wrapped my front end rebuild Friday night. What part of town are you in, and when are you looking to do it? I've got the manual and most of the tools necessary. What kind of workspace do you have, garage/carport?

I can't promise a lot of time (i've got a baby on the way very soon, and have alot of other "projects"), but maybe a little each day one weekend.

TCB,
I can/will help you do your knuckle job if you need me to. I have all the tools necessary to do the job right and have done it many times in the past. Just let me know when is good for you and I will be more than happy to help you out. Please call me though as i am pretty lousy about checking my e-mail and pm's.

Matt:cheers:

Oh yeah, my number is (901)-218-3480. I can help you any time this week as i am off all week for BBQ fest.

cleaning out the bifs was the most time consuming single process for me. one side i tried without disasembling at all which took forever and didn't do a great job.

the other side i separated the inner from the outer ONLY (leave the ball cages alone, just take the inner axle out of the joint) using the big hammer method. a can or 2 of brake cleaner (with the little tube) later and about 10 minutes and i'd redone both of them more thoroughly than the first.

if you go that route, more than likely you will break the clip that holds the joints together (i broke one of the 2) they're cheap from the dealer even without callin Cdan. they're supposed to be single use as far as i know

the writeups here are good, and i found this one to be particurlarl useful because of the way it's broken down. read it a bunch of times
