First order of busines was planning for the May Long Weekend May 20-22 trip to the Churn Creek/ Black Dome Mountain/ Yodel Creek area south of the Gang Ranch. I will post a roadmap directions on Mud later. The Trail Boss will be Mike McT although not everybody may be able to keep up with him out in the bush. Mike and Bill are planning to go up to Churn Creek on Friday, May 19 and set camp. We will place a sign on the road indicating our campsite turn off, slightly South of last year’s location. Members are advised to take plenty of fuel in Jerry cans, we will need it if we take the backroads route home.
Members who expect to go on the May Long weekend so far are:
Rod McD., Mike McT., Phil S. (tentative), Greg B., Bill W., Don D.(new member), Martin S., Craig E., Steve T., and Gary T (tentative). Who else is in for this trip?

I hope to make this trip; looking forward to more details.

-Steve

Welcome aboard Wussypup. I'll post some kind of map eventually. The simplest way to get there is to go Fraser Canyon to just past Clinton, then West up Canoe Creek FSR to the Gang Ranch bridge. After you get over the bridge, go downstream along the river road until you see our sign. More later.

OK, HERE IS A MAP SHOWING TWO POSSIBLE ROUTES TO GET TO THE CHURN CREEK CAMPSITE ON MAY 20-22.
FIRST, YOU COULD GO UP THE FRASER CANYON AND ON TO CLINTON. THEN TAKE THE BIG BAR LAKE ROAD, JESMOND ROAD, CANOE CREEK ROAD, AND FRASER CANOE ROAD TO THE BRIDGE. SEE MAP.

THE ALTERNATE ROUTE WOULD BE GO VIA WHISTLER TO PEMBERTON, DUFFY LAKE ROAD, LILLOOET, PAVILLION MTN ROAD, JESMOND ROAD, CANOE CREEK ROAD, AND FRASER CANOE ROAD TO THE BRIDGE. ALSO SEE MAP.

MAYBE TAKE A LOOP GOING ONE WAY UP AND THE OTHER WAY DOWN. MORE IMPORTANTLY, TAKE LOTS OF FUEL, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE DRIVING A GASSER. GAS UP IN LILLOOET AND TAKE EXTRA GAS. THERE MIGHT BE SOME GAS AT THE CANOE CREEK INDIAN BAND, BUT LAST YEAR IT WAS CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAY.

THIS MAP IS ONLY APPROXIMATE. BETTER TO BUY YOUR OWN MAP BOOK, BUT NOT THE MUSSI BOOK CO., "B.C. BACKROADS MAPBOOK" BECAUSE IT DOES NOT SHOW THIS AREA PROPERLY. BETTER TO BUY THE MapArt BRITISH COLUMBIA ROAD ATLAS FOR ABOUT $20 BUCKS, THE MAPS ARE SMALLER BUT THEY SHOW NAMES OF F.S. ROADS.

Dan may have room for a navigator.
Now that Dan has a broken hand, possibly Steve can drive Dan's vehicle which has more for two people than Steve's vehicle.

Can anyone come up with the business hours of the Dog Creek store/gas station for the long weekend? I have been trying on Google, etc with no luck. I think it was closed on the Sat/Sun last year. Do they have diesel? ;p

I haven't heard yet, but I think the Dog Creek gas station has diesel and will probably be open Friday the 19th, but quite likely closed over the long weekend. Anybody have more info? How about Saturday?

There are a number of routes to Canoe Creek, to my mind the meadow creek road (just a few km N) is prettiest. It leads through lots of meadows and past a lot of lakes. It's semi-paved not gravel, unlike the Big Bar road which is gravel, which means a lot less dust, but also less of an "off-road" feel. Just my 2 cents. I was up on the Gang Ranch 2 weeks ago (en-route to Bella Coola / Tweedsmuir), took the plateau route through to Hanceville, still a tiny bit of snow right at the top. Fantastic. Loved "The Hill".

I received the following info from the Canoe Creek Band regarding store hours at Dog Creek; I'll ask again about diesel.

Canoe Creek Band Store Hours

Monday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

May 22, 2006 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

How do those spanking new radios you all got work? Could you call into "town" from the camp?

Does anyone have a satellite phone they will be taking on the trip?

*researching quickest manner of obtaining emergency veterinary attention if required*

Unfortunately our VHF radios only normally work "line of sight" which means that they won't reach Clinton from the campsite. Possibly from the top of Black Dome Mountain might work. However, if there was a repeater station within range, we might be able to relay a message out.
I think its a better bet to get the phone numbers now of any Vets in Clinton, then drive into Dog Creek and phone them if necessary.

Need Jerry cans

Does anybody know where to get some go 'ol fashioned traditional jerry cans that I need for the Churn creek trip? All I've seen so far is these newfangled low profile units with strange venting and a child proof caps!

Something tells me this trip is going to show me why my last truck was a deisel! :frown:
