Hey all

I've got a 12v tach that's been sitting here staring at me for months....
and I've got an HJ60 that has no tach.

So the general idea is to put the two together.

I've been told that the sender for the tach is on the bellhousing

and I've got some wires on that bellhousing... or at least wiring harness plugs.

How do I know which wire is the winner? What sort of signal does it put out?

Asked another way: If I were to assume that the sender is there (PO might have subbed the water temp guage for the tach... since the water temp guage is currently sitting there) how do I figure out the wiring.

Thanks!

Duuno if this will help much, but...

The pic is of a 13BT tach sender location. I believe the 2H uses the same idea. It is called the Hall Sensor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor

Greg is correct. The 2H tach sensor is on the bellhousing, and it is the only sensor on the bellhousing.
The 2H has 3 wires coming fdrom the ranny-trans combo, the tach sensor, the reverse sensor, and the 4WD sensor. they are connected through a peice of harness, and then pliug into a big white plug on the passenger side fender in the engine compartment.
here is a pic from the inside of a 2H bellhousing, with the threads for the sensor on the right.
hope that helps,
Jan

Pretty sure the 12 volt tach will not work with the 24 volt electrics, thinking it stays pinned when plugged in.

Just to add to the confusion, a 24v 1HZ tach works perfectly with 12V

Dave

Ya it seems 24 to 12 volt works but going from 24 volt electrics into a 12volt gauge is a problem.

Good info Dave....

my 2H is 12V, so no worries there. will crawl under today maybe to take a look around and see if the sensor is there. if not, I guess I'll have to hit some junkyards to see.... Anyone know about the tach sender on a Dyna?

Is this also the same location for a 3B tach sensor? my tach just stopped working today just after i finished the exhaust for my home brew turbo and I have no clue were the sensor is located plese help me
many thanks all

If you crawl under your HJ .. you wil see the cable that goes from the top drivers side of the bell housing over it and to the pass side .. you will be able to catch it again close to the starter .. that it's the same place where it merge with the harness that go inside the cabin ..

this area ..

thanks Tapage i think i severd the wires when i pull the old exhaust
i pulled the sensor today and soldered the wires back together (i had to drill right beside the wires as they were severed clean) but all works great now
thanks again

i dont think the sensor is 12V more like a on of switch from my readings it senses when the magnet(s) in the fly wheel come by sending back a reading in RPM to the tach which im sure would need to be 24V
hope this helps

Sandcruiser, I think I have a spare sensor for you if needed. It will cost you a trip down and a coupla of Imperials!! I need to check my inventory to be sure. The sensor is on the driver side of the bell housing in alignment with the ring gear.

Whats up with your motor mounts and the peridoic rough idle???

hey rick

Thanks for the tach offer.... but for good or bad, I am going to sell the hj60 :(
I finally bought an autometer tach for it, but never got it installed. Might throw it in when I sell, if the buyer seems like they'll use it. Probably just hold on to it as *some day* I plan to build another wheeling rig and the tach may come in handy.

Motor mounts: big improvment by replacing the DS front mount. Still waiting on the tranny mount (Purdy might get them in a month).

Idle is still funky, must spend some time troubleshooting.

If you know anyone who is in the market for a nice hj60 w/ OME suspension (shocks are brand new), and cibie lights w/ H4s... lemme know. At the moment, the EDIC is acting up. Trying to fix it.

side note: if you haven't upgraded your 60's lights, you should make me an offer on the cibies. They are an incredible upgrade! And I doubt that anyone will pay a few hundo extra for truck w/ or w/o the lights.

last thought: if you know of a working EDIC out there, I'm looking for one.

I'll send you a link with 10 minutes of putting up an ad! :)

thanks
Steve
