Sometimes my BJ74 runs on after you turn it off, generally only after a long run - you can even take out the key, it keeps on truckin'. At first I thought oh that's nice, it automatically runs on for a while so you don't fry the turbo, but a couple of times I've left it and come back twenty minutes later, still chugging away. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it stops, sometimes when you put the key back in, turn it on to accessories, it'll stop - sometimes not.

Dodgy fuel cut-off? Undocumented turbo protector? Any ideas welcome.

faulty VSV ?

I have a similar porblem with my 60. If I leave it in reverse and turn the key off and even pull the key out, the 60 will never shut down??? As soon as I take it out of reverse it shuts down right away, it is kind of neet. I have a couple of electrical issues currently, so I am sure once I get around to looking at it I will see a wire that needs to be replaced or something along that lines.

on old smokey the bugger would sometimes shut down and sometimes not. it was the VSV but i was too busy ever to do anything about it.
if it is the problem you should be able to either replce the VSV or get yourself a choke cable and take care of the problem manually... might be good theft deterent as well.
cheers

Hey Skinny, thats the cruiser I had problems with I seem to remember the same thing happened to me. Why didnt you come out on Sunday?

I remember an old FJ40 that I had, it would only shut off if I turned the lights off, some slight wiring problems with that one.

Forgot about the 13bt not having EDIC, still getting familiar with these 74's - and I do love em.

Yes Louis it is your old truck and has multiple electrical issue rigtht now, nothing too serious. The worst is the fact the brake lights don't work with the running lights on. Also when switching to high beam the lights go out and it sometimes takes a couple of seconds before the high beams kick in. One of these years I will get to these issues. My problem shut down doesn't sound quit the same problem as Lowfour.

As far as the run goes I had something come up last minute so I was unable to make it. From the message you left (second hand from the wife), I didn't think you were going? How was it ?

That truck was wired with speaker cable when I got it many years ago, I replaced teh wiring harness with one from a beater 60 a few years before you got it.

I couldnt make it either, but i did meet up with everyone before they left, a few guys went. I couldnt go because my 33's off the 80 wouldnt fit on the 74. Slightly dissapointed. We should hit Carp trail shortly though.

A bit of an interesting side note....

The VSV shut-down is a superior design to the EDIC style fuel shut down as starving the engine of air is the only guaranteed way to kill it.

I heard an anecdote of a local Unimog that rolled down a hill and ended up on it's roof. The MB diesel engine uses a fuel cut-off device and the driver tried to shut it off when he landed on the lid, but engine oil was leaking past the rings, and combusting. The engine wouldn't stop as it found it's own fuel source. They finally shoved something into the intake pipe to cut off the air and kill the engine, but it would have run untill it was out of oil or the bearings siezed!

My vote: Dodgy VSV, and on the 13BT it should be located on the block, rear left side. Best thing you can do for the VSV on the 13BT is relocate it to the firewall, and higher.
