Delighted to announce the arrival of a new (to me) BJ74 (13BT, AT) straight from Japan.
I have no service manual yet, can anyone tell me how to operate the PTO winch? Why are there on and off buttons on the winch lever?
I would also be interested to have an English translation of all the instructions written on the glove box.

Thanks

I'm trying to guess where you are from the pictures, narrowed it down:

-Southern Saskatchewan - licence plate is wrong though...
-Southern Australia - West of Melbourne?
-Russian plains?

Nice rig, no clue on your questions.

Congratulations on your new rig...you're going to love it!

Mine's an MT, but procedures should be similar.

-Make sure that the lever on your PTO winch head is off (you can tell because the dog collar will not be engaged on the winch drum).

-Put your tranny in Neutral, and your T-case into Neutral.

-Pay out your cable and secure it to where you want. Engage the dog collar by moving the lever on the PTO winch head. Make sure the pin on the lever is secured to the appropriate hole in the plate.

-Put the PTO lever in the cab to "ON". You will have to simultaneously push down the two buttons while moving the lever to move it. It sometimes takes a bit of effort to make it go into place.

-Put your transmission into gear, probably one of the lower ones, and start pulling by applying throttle slowly. Forward gears would pull the winch cable in, and Reverse should pay it out.

Maybe practice on something before you have to use it for real to get comfortable with it. I've already pulled out a Minitruck from a ditch and up a long embankment, and the PTO didn't even really feel like it was trying. From the discussion here, it sounds like the OEM shear pin is a bit light, so you have to watch that. Some have suggested drilling out the shear pin hole slightly and fitting a slightly larger one to prevent easy breakage on the trail.

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks Stone,

I was not quite sure whether the dog collar should be engaged or not.
The OEM shear pin has already snapped. Someone had hooked the hook onto the angle iron behind the winch and wound it up tight. It was a bitch to get loose.

Moose,
I dont know which of your guesses is closest. Geographically, possibly Russia. For the record, Im in southern Africa and I have not seen ANY other 70 to 74s on the roads here

Read his initial information again. He has an automatic tranny. Using a PTO with an auto is a little more complicated since even in neutral the tranny will creep a little.

I suggest great care until you feel comfortable with it.

Yup...I can read and realize that his is an Auto, that's why I said this. I wasn't sure if 100% of the procedures would be the same, but I figured that they would be similar.
