On moms 97, the dang sunvisor will not go back up and its kinda stuck half way down, I can see nothing wrong with it, its not loose, just one day it wouldn't go back up.

anyone seen this before?

darn things aint cheap, $170 for a new one.......

Mine does that and I've seen others mention the problem. I haven't seen any way to correct it. I think it may have just worn out. If it's any consolation you rprice is about 110 less than what the local lexus dealer wants.

I assume you mean a used sunvisior is $110 less? New ones can be found cheaper than $170 but not $110 less.

If I'm reading him right, mania is saying that it costs $280 at
the Lexus Dalership.
If thats true, I'll sell mine for 1/2 that. :flipoff2:

Landpimp,
Can you describe what is going on with it in a different way or clarify with a picture what the problem is? I'm not familiar with your issue, but I work for an automotive interiors supplier and have experience with visor manufacturing and have visor engineers sitting all around me. Is the sun visor hanging down all the time and can't be forced back into the up position, or can it be put up but it droops back down?

It most likely is a problem with the detent spring or how the spring is located on the rod. The big problem would be if you need to get into the visor to fix it. I haven't looked at the construction, but most are glued (cardboard core) or heat sealed (plastic core). You pretty much destroy it when splitting it apart. I'll have to look at it closer when I get in it later.

Has anyone who replaced theirs for this problem torn the old one apart and looked at it? Do you still have the old one so we could see a picture of the inside construction?

Velcro?

You're a big boy......just force it!

BTW does Toyota oak match Lexus oak exactly or very close?

Matches exactly. I got my replacement (DS) from Dan. Mine was doing the same thing 'Pimp described.

I'll try

currently the visor is almost vertical, when you go to put it up(to the headlinner) it pops back down, it doesnt just fall down, it pops down like there is something "springy"

I know my old cruisers the rod just slides out of the visor body, some of these also have a tension screw

Landpimp - That springing action is from the detent spring. It is supposed to be springing it up to the storage position and holding it. Not sure of the visor design in the 80, but the spring in our designs usually locates on a flat ground on the round rod running into the visor. I'll look at mine closer over lunch. Something isn't where it's supposed to be inside of yours (obviously). Maybe there's a way to work it back into position. Hopefully I don't screw mine up while looking at it.

My passenger side does the same thing. I took it off and it appears that there's a rod which supports the rear of the visor, and a couple of "clips" which allow the visor to rotate. In mine, it seems as if the clips have rotated so that the visor will not go all the way back up.

As it seems to be a sealed unit, I don't think it can be repaired without opening up the visor itself, and maybe having to resew it....

Did you or your mom encounter a high wind while heading into the sun recently??? :D

perhaps the spring is sprung. I surmise some careful exploratory surgery will result in an improvement.

I meant the lexus version is 280.

Holy crap, can my reading comprehension suck any more?

My 93 did this. The visor has a spring steel clip assembly that the visor mount rod slides in to. The visor rod is metal with a plastic covering. The plastic cover has a flat spot in it that the flat on the spring steel rests on to hold the visor up. The problem with mine was the plastic deteriorated and thus would no longer hold in the regular flat spot. I tried to epoxy it and file a flat spot in it but the epoxy eventually broke down. I finally got twisted  and tore it back out cut away the remaining plastic and put a few tac welds on it with the mig and then ground it to the correct shape. So far so good. Let me know if you want pics and I will try to post.

Well, my 95 passenger side seems to have this problem as well. It will push up to the sealing but then seems to sag and hang down a few inches. It certainly doesn't "spring" down - but the carboard or plastic in there seems to be intact. I'd love to find a semi-easy fix for this. Who is going to crack the code on this one!

well I fixed it..........just bought a new one ;) $140.....

and the REALLY wierd thing.........the rear wiper wasn't working(stoped a few months ago, been meaning to look into it)........but after JUST replacing the sun visor.........the wiper works.......I CHIT you not! I KNOW they can't be related.................but I aint bitchin :D

This was a bit of a tweek but I have more time than money right now. It took me about 1/2 hour.
Individual results may vary ;)

P1 trashed plastic on arm
P2 view inside visor under mirror of clip assembly
P3 big hack job in progress
