A few of us, myself included run cryo-treated parts....I've got my rear coarse ring-pinion done and have thoroughly thrashed that with fine success....Bruce has his rear shafts cryo'd.

Any opinions on having a pair of knuckles cryo'd and the strength gains from that?

My understanding is that cryo'ing is that it actualy softens the material so that it will react better to shock loads which will help things such as axle shafts and pinions but im not sure if knuckles would bennifit or not. My first reaction is that it probablt wouldnt help prevent the kind of failure that you had but you never know it couldnt hurt.

Mark's (Helocat) pic of Woody's carnage:

this thread needed a pic :)

Are any of those parts made of cast steel? Does a cryo- treatment work at all for cast material? I don't know but have serious doubts.

none of these are cast...good question Jack...

I'll have to email Dean on this and see what he thinks....wanna get my rear mini shafts done anyways, and may customize a knuckle to allow it to work as a single spare (double-caliper tabs on it)....

turd polishing 101....lol

woody , Have been thinking on this for a while , checked Marlin's knuckle in development , researched the 5 th. stud mod. , and most recently have been discussing the benefits ( or not ) of a plate that would bolt on behind spindle and backing plate that would then have a tab welded to it that would somehow bolt down with steering arm to transfer steering input to take some load off arm. With the disc conv. kits you can almost weld an additional tab right to it that would help or not ??????

Marlin Crawler is working on something to fix this kind of issue. It's a 6 stud steering knuckle.

One of the guys in my club had the same knuckle failures twice. But that was on stock 77 knuckles, not on mini/79+ knuckles.

I almost want to say have some dana 60 knuckles grafted onto your center section.

I've followed the threads on PBB on this, and emailed with Chris Geiger last night....he did mention that the final design would include the ability to instal on either axle, so it would have caliper tabs for both sides. Very sweet piece, and an estimated price of $150 each. Marlin will also be providing tabs for all those folks with steel arms (like Lukes) so you don't have to replace those.

also 3-4 months out, so doing me zero good right now.

My idea although prolly lame is.............

Hows about a steel plate with about 1/4 inch thick like a tcase saver and extend it over the edge and down the knuckle where it would be drilled and tapped for two or more extra helper fasteners?????

Then I guess you would have to deal with the steer arms and the bearings, one idea leads to another problem.

similar thought, use a plate where the two 1/2 moons go, screwed in with those same screws, and attached to the knuckle....

hhhmmm.....waiting for Dean to reply, probably tomorrow tho....

but it would be attached with those tiny little what.. 6mm bolts?

That knuckle setup is sweet...

Not Lame. Let me take it a little further... why not use an upper and lower steering arm that combine/bolt together/meet at the TRE? Why use 4 or 6 when 8 are available...at least on pre 80 series axles.

that is where it is at , an arm from each trunion meeting at tre but using a hiem and straight holes in the arm ends , I'll buy a set now , just make em for the old small pattern.

per Dean on PBB: "For some reson it does seem to help and it has to be releasing all the residule stress and refining the grain structure of the cast. Look what it does fro break rotors..it adds about 300% of life to them and they are just cast crap!"

in other words, what the hell....strip this mini housing, send in the knuckles, see what happens....worst case, it's the same :D

I may need to adjust my .sig line...

"amateur turd polisher"

Those my mini knuckles???

:flipoff2:

And you are not an amateur turd polisher at all. I think you get the "best of " turd polisher awards;)

well woody , mr. manny is sending me some spare knuckles , I will see if Bobby's cryo guy would do it ????
