I know this has been discussed in the past but my search did not turn up the actual procedure. Does anyone have the FSM who can tell me the step by step procedure. I have a new master key which has been cut but I don't have the instructions.

I would like this to go into FAQ.

I won't pay the stealer to do this. They all think it is worth $90 of their time.

Thanks! I'll have my own FSM in a few weeks...

I have the procedure for the 99, and was going to scan the pages for the FAQ. I didn't because

A. it is a confusing diagram of procedures over 3-4 pages and
B. I didn't know if it would apply to all year models.

The long and short of it is, the FAQ could nearly have both FSM's scanned into them, but it looks like DIYers need to get a copy of their own.

I need the instructions as well. I got a spare key on eBay, but not yet programmed.

1998-2003 transponder key registration

Here's the steps according to my 99 FSM, volume 2, Section BE, page 147:

For a Master Key:

1. Depressing brake pedal and acceleration pedal:
2. Insert already registered master key in the key cylinder.

Within 15 seconds:

3. Depress and release the acceleration pedal 5 times.

Within 20 seconds:

4. Depress and release the brake pedal 6 times, and remove the master key.

Within 10 seconds:

5. Insert key to be registered in key cylinder.

Within 10 seconds:

6. Depress and release the acceleration pedal 1 time. (Security indicator blinks).

After 60 seconds, additional master key is registered. (Security indicator is off).

The registration mode completes when pulling out the key and depressing and releasing the brake pedal once or more within 10 seconds after indicator has been off or 10 seconds have passed.

It is possible to register up to 7 master key codes including the already registered key code.

Note: This requires that you have a pre-programmed master key. Without it, the computer must be replaced!

Another procedure is outlined for doing this using the Toyota handheld tester.

registering a sub (valet) key

Here's the steps according to my 99 FSM, volume 2, Section BE, page 149:

For a Sub-Key:

1. Depressing brake pedal and acceleration pedal:
2. Insert already registered master key in the key cylinder.

Within 15 seconds:

3. Depress and release the acceleration pedal 4 times.

Within 20 seconds:

4. Depress and release the brake pedal 5 times, and remove the master key.

Within 10 seconds:

5. Insert key to be registered in key cylinder.

Within 10 seconds:

6. Depress and release the acceleration pedal 1 time. (Security indicator blinks).

After 60 seconds, additional sub-key is registered. (Security indicator is off).

The registration mode completes when pulling out the key and depressing and releasing the brake pedal once or more within 10 seconds after indicator has been off or 10 seconds have passed.

It is possible to register up to 3 sub-key codes including the already registered key code.

Note: This requires that you have a pre-programmed master key. Without it, the computer must be replaced!

When I bought my remote key, there was another procedure for programming the remote. It involved locking and unlocking the doors and a few other steps, but I haven't located those instructions yet.

does anybody know (could check?) if the instructions above are OK for other years?

1998 key programming problems

OK so I wasnt sure if the only key that I had was a master as it would not open the glove box, I have a 98 lc, and a Toyota factory replaced key was around $320. The one I have is the remote kind of key. So anyway, I purchased 2 keys from ebay, one w/ remote functions and one without.I went to program the non-remote key using the instructions in so many threads, (insert working key, accelarator 5x, brake 6x, insert new key, accelerator 1x, wait 60seconds, light goes off , remove key, brake 1x) .After a few attempts I got it programmed and it worked. Now the remote key however is where the problems are arrising. I managed to get the remote functions programmed, after several attempts. But I still cant get the ECU programmimg to work. Any more ideas. I pressume that the keys are clean and never programmed prior but How can I tell for sure? Is there a differant way to programm master keys, or any suggestions, from anyone with similar experiences. Thanks in advance for the help and for the help Ive already received from the forum, Thomas

I don't know if the remote key is any different to program..however CDan told me he thought (key word thought) you are limited to something like 4 or 5 key programs and that's it...but no one TMK really knows how many keys can be programmed.

Is there anyway to tell how many keys are already programmed and maybe to erase prior programmed keys, and not lose the one master I already have?

Not that I know of...but maybe SINCITY100 or Cdan would be a resource at Toyota.
