Can you tell me the disadvantages and advantages of a 60 vs. 80? I actually like the boxie look of the 60 over the 80. I know they are older truck, but parts are available too.
Lets hear from both sides please.

Thanks
Steve

Thats kinda broad,,,do you mean just the FJ60 vs the FJ80 or the 60/62 vs the 80 series?

1 - manual vs automatic
2 - manual vs power equipment (locks, windows, etc)
3 - carb vs fuel injection
4 - 60 will prob have more power compared to 91-92 80 since the 80 still has 3FE, which is a little wimpy when put in the 80 body style
5 - classic look vs modern look

this is a good start, i'm sure others can shed more light and be more specific for you

jeff

ps i went in between the two and got a 62, best of both worlds, IMNSHO!

I am kind of in the same boat right now. My wife would prefer me to get an 80, but I love my 60. If you go with a 60 series, I suggest a 60 over a 62. But that is just my opinion. To make this decidion, you must be honest with yourself about what you will use the vehicle for. If you are going to do some serious off roading, (The following is just an opinion) and limited on highway time, go with the 60. I say this because I think that you will be less nervious about scratching up a 60. If you are going to spend alot of time on paved orat least improved roads, an 80 may be your cup of tea. However, I have learned off this board if you go 80 go with a 93+ vehicle.

I own both of them.

The 60 has it's advantages, but for hardcore wheelin' or crawlin' there's nothing like a set of factory lockers on a FZJ80.

The 60 actually draws more attention, but it's harder to drive at freeway speeds, needs gear swap for serious tires, etc...

I can't really say anything bad about the Fzj80 except it's HEAVY and needs better brakes.

Refine the discussion

Actually I like the FJ 62 the best as far as looks. I really like Jeremy Paris's pictures of his 62. Two tone paint, etc.
Now that is one good looking ride.

I will be using this truck for long distance drives (Hunting trips) 10-16 hours one way. Several of them a year. Some off road stuff on logging trails, etc. No hard core 4 wheeling, but need something will get me thru the logging roads.
So probably 4-5 trips a year, and then to the Clays Course on the weekends.

Thanks for everybody's input.

go for the 80, 65 mph will drive you nuts

I would go with an 80 for what you will be using it for. I do several out-of-state hunting trips every year and my 60 stays at home for anything over 4 hours. A '93+ FZJ80 would be my choice for longer trips. A 62 would work, but the older 80s are getting pretty affordable.

Man, that's a tough decision. You should buy both, then you don't have to decide. Ultimately you are going to have to make your own decision. I don't know what we could say either way. Both have many advantages and both have few disadvantages. You really can't go wrong with either.

Actually, an easy question. An 80 is better in every way than a 60, so if you can only have 1 truck, do youself a favor and get an 80. Now with that said, since I bought my 60 2 years ago, I hardly ever drive the 80. The 60 has soul, the 80 has competence.

I have owned both. The 80 has more power, is more comfortable and has a much better ride quality. But, the 60 has style. The 60 has far fewer things to go wrong. Warning lights were for ever alerting me to some problem or other with the 80. The 60 just keeps quiet and keeps going. If you can find a good low milege 60 then buy it. The 60/62 is the pinnacle of 4WD engineering - best model of any manufacturer ever - honest.

Jim,

I think that is what I wanted to hear. I like Classic Trucks, Guns, etc. Now why is that the 60 is not as comfortable as the 80 on long trips. Is it the seats, noise, what else?

Toughest truck ever

I don't agree maybe it's just my seats but I definately prefer my FJ62 for road trips rather than my friends 93 land cruiser. If I were you I'd get the 62 over the pre 1995 80 series, the interior/ exterior is better in the 62 and there is no truck out there tougher than the 60 series land cruisers by the way ph beerman the 62 is better than the 60

i would guess that leaf springs vs coil springs has something to do with the ride quality difference

ps as soon as i get my power steering fixed in my FJ62 i am looking at selling my Lexus GS 300 - i enjoy driving my 62 that much. plus, i get compliments all the time on the 62 (notes stuck under my wipers, girls flashing me as i drive down the street, you get the picture), nothing about the Lexus

I've got a 60 and a 62, I wouldn't trade my 60 for my wife's 62 anyday of the week. The 62 is bone stock, quiet, and gutless as hell, I can barely stand driving it. The 60 is a stock 2F, MAF ceramic header, full stainless hi-flow exhaust, and hauls a** for the size/engine combo. 65 is easy, 75 is easy, I don't need to break the speed limit. But I don't mind the noise, I enjoy it. And you can't beat a stick!

The earlier points are true - if you can find a 62 and an 80 in the same condition, with the same mileage, you'll probably end up paying less for the 80.

That would be nice to have a 62 with a manual transmission. It is true driving my 60 on the highway is loud and kinda rough with the OME springs. I plan on reducing the road noise and making it more comfortable for roadtrips. But I have just enjoyed driving my 60 since I was 17 and no new car or truck compares to it.

It seems like to me parts for 80's are more expensive for like lifts and mods than 60's. But I might be wrong I don't have a 80.

Steve:

For Power the FZJ80 engine is the winner. For simplicity, the 2f on the FJ60 wins.

The manual tranny is better, IMHO, than the auto for OR use. That said, I swapped the standard FJ60 4 speed for a Toyota H55F 5 speed with over drive. Huge improvment - and a costly mod.

The FJ80 suspension is better over the road. The standard suspension on the 60 is rough - the full OME suspension and FJ62 rear sway bar that I have on my 60 makes it much better than stock on and off road. Another costly mod. Remeber - even the new Corvette has rear leaf springs...

Weight - At 4200 lbs. the FJ60 is almost half the weight of the FZJ80. This makes the 60 a little more nimble off road.

Cool Factor - The FJ60 OWNS cool. Despite its great capability, the FZJ80 looks like a mall crusier (My opinion!)

Cost - nothing to choose here. If you get a 60, you'll spend money on mods. I spent enough on my 60 to buy a late model FZJ80. But then I would not have a 60!

For your intended use, I suggest that you get a low mileage, late model year FZJ80 with FACTORY LOCKERS. It will drive good on highway or secondary roads, haul dogs, guns, and misc, crap to and from just about anywhere. Your wife will like it better.

It is all down to springs v coils. Springs will just never be as good. That said, the ride in my 62 is acceptable - but not as good as an 80. Seats are fine, as is the leg room - just a bit bumpy - that's all. Noise is no different - that mostly comes down to tires anyway.

I'm telling you, if you buy an 80 you will always be looking enviously at 60s. Just buy a 60

The best 60 is the 62. Manual of course and obviously diesel
