Is screw #1 = The Fast Idle screw?
Is screw #2 = Idel screw?

or do I have them reversed?

Here's what I did. During the emissions process I had a local guy play with carb to get it to pass at idle. He said he just adjusted the idle speed screw. But when I got the truck back I pulled the choke and the rpm went pasted 2500 so I pushed it back in. For a few months I drove it around and it was fine I just wouldn't pull the choke out because even at one click on the choke the idle would race up to 2000rpms!

So yesterday I went to bring the idle back down to 650rpm. I did this by turning screw #2. I had the truck running and loosening the screw (counterclock wise) it brought the idle down. But the choke setting was still not working correct.

I started loosening the screw #1 (counterclock wise) while the engine was running trying to determine if that would help. No change started tighting it aswell. Well somwhere in between tighting and loosening the idle race up to 2000rpms and I couldn't get it back down. I had to readjusted screw #2 to get it back down to 650rpm. I drove it around the block and noticed the idle was getting stuck, pulled over and pushed down on some of the linkage and it bought it back down to under 1000rpm. I drove around a bit more and also discovered that I bring the idle down buy pulling up on the gas pedal.

The picture is for reference I had an extra rebuilt carb so I pulled that out to see what hell I was doing.

#1 screw is Idle

#2 is Choke applied fast idle

---

With choke 'off', tap accel pedel once or twice to
ensure fast idle cam (under screw #2) is out of the way.

back # 2 3/4 turn, then back #1 slowly
---if by the time #1 is 3/4 'backed' no decrease in rev,
---do another 1/2 turn on #2
---by now, you should be able to set curb idle

slightly depress gas pedel ( engine to 2000 rpm), pull choke cable,
release gas pedel, then adj #2 screw

enjoy

So I had it backwards the whole time, DAMN!

Can I get some more confirms that I had it backwards?

This is off an 84 fj60

thanks soggy60 and 2mbb, it worked and now she idles perfectly and the chokes works as well.

Ok, guys I'm back to square one. I used the method twice, I get the idle down and I get the choke to work (when its pulled it rev's to just under 2k) but after a 15 mins or so of driving it won't idle back down. It'll be somewhere inbetween 1k-2k. I can pull the gas pedal and bring the idle down that way.

Any ideas guys?

Dude i had the same issue with my 40, same engine though, you need to replace the spring that pulls the gas pedal up.

not to hijack but does anyone have a pic of the idle mixture screw? Or is that the 1# screw in the pic

Thanks for the help;)

the Idle mixture is usually covered with a metal cap that needs to be drill out get to the head of screw. So if your carb has never been tampered with it might still have that metal cap on it.

Hmmm but how does that explain that once the idle gets "stuck" that I can no longer pull out the choke if it's just the gas pedal return spring?

Wher is the gas pedal return spring? any pics?

the gas pedal return spring is in the cab and it attaches to the vertical arm attached to the gas pedal. It's spring 78110A in this picture.
accel linkage.webp

Yea my idle goes up too, it wasnt until after I rebuilt my carb when it started, I haven't thought about it much, but I just did the pull up with my foot trick...

Use lithium grease and try lubing it up first, along with other linkages, I had the same problem before doing this.
