FJ62 Stock Radio FZJ80 Stereo with Ipod Adaptor

FJ62 Stock Radio upgrade to FZJ80 Stereo with Ipod Adaptor Sorry for misleading FJ60 owners. This application strictly applies to FJ62's.

Hello all here’s what I did last weekend to my FJ62 to get the Ipod integrated with a stock looking radio. I hope you all can benefit from my music seeking adventures while maintaining the OEM look.

Note: You could ignore the Ipod adapter and use this thread to simply install an upgraded CD/Tape/Radio FZJ80 Toyota Head Unit.

  • Find yourself an FZJ80 stereo. There are many out there and go from $60.00 to $100.00
  • Locate an amplifier from a 4Runner (see picture below). The stock FJ62 wires/plugs connect into the amp and then the amp wire/plug connects to the FZJ80 stereo. There are plenty out there and go for about $20.00
  • Buy a Tape Adapter (don’t go cheap) spend a little more for a better quality tape adapter. Don’t want it to fail after a month or so.
  • Disassemble your dash bezels (lots of screws but easy). Remove your old FJ62 Head Unit.
  • Connect the Amplifier. Find a place to secure amp. I used old bracket but there are many options for you all as there is plenty of space back there.
  • Test the FZJ80 Stereo and insert the Tape deck adapter.
  • Remove the FZJ80 Stereo and take to your work bench. Remove button and black tape dislodge the clips and pull off face plate (pull tape adapter wire through tape deck door).
  • Hide the wire behind the face plate.
  • Re-assemble face plate.
  • Install your new head unit onto the dash, re-assemble dash.
  • Enjoy your favorite Radio Stations, CD’s and your Ipod! With a stock looking unit (green lights to boot!) and no wires hanging all over the place as a plus no trimming or modifications of your dash bezel.

That looks nice. How is the sound quality using the tape adapter with the ipod?

The sound quality is exceptional.

Another plus, the tape deck adapter while running (after you hit the tape button on the head unit) is super quiet.

The amp really makes a difference. In fact I'm very tenative to go full volume fearing that I will bust my stock speakers.

That's a sweet setup, it's stupid easy. Wish I would have done that instead of blowing $300 on a new Alpine deck. (which sounds amazing, BTW)

What are you using to charge your iPod?

Thanks....usually bring it in and charge with computer when I up-date, however I do have portable charger in the glove compartment.

Anyone able to chime in on feasability on using the 4rnr amp with the popular Scion radio swaps for the 62's? I reason that if the stock connectors will plug into the amp, and then amp to radio, then the amp connections simply must be generic Toy. This assumes that the 4rnr external amp has something over the Scion HU amp.

No clue...so don't quote me but I dont think it could hurt. Let us know.
