Hi All:

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it yet, but do a search of prior MUD threads for lots of info on this subject; it has come up many times before!

My short answer is that the OE factory PS for the 40/45 Series is fine for smallish tires but does not handle 33 or bigger tires off-road very well, especially when the front diff is locked-up. The so-called "Mini-truck" PS conversion is very similar to the OE set-up and suffers similar shortcomings. Both of these systems retain all the stock steering pivots including the "center arm," which can lead to vague steering if all the associated parts are not in good shape.

The typical Saginaw PS swap is time-tested, fairly inexpensive to do one's self, and handles the big meats easily. On road manners aren't bad either, though some folks like the increased road feedback inherent to the OE PS system.

The 60/62 Series PS swap is a fairly new option; I don't know much about it but people who have it on their rigs seem to like it. The "Scout" PS option mounts on the frame in a similar location as the 60/62 Series 'box, but uses a IH Scout II steering box (made by Saginaw) instead.

You need to decide what you are going to use the rig for, size of tires, etc. as well as being realistic as to your instalation ability and project budget.

My '74 FJ40 has a Saginaw PS conversion that some friends helped me install about 4 years ago. It cost about $300 in parts (new, used, and custom) and was not that hard a swap to perform, but that was mainly because of the knowledge and skills of one of my buddies! I am happy with this PS swap; it works well both on and off-road for me.

Good luck!

Alan

If the meadow cruiser's power steering is free for you then I'd say that it is the best kind until and unless you need something else.

How would you possibly expect anyone out here to be able to give you any constructive advice with this?

Is it Saginaw?

Is it Factory?

Is it Saginaw Scout?

Is it Factory Mini conversion?

Is it FJ60 series swap?

Is it Astro?

Is it ????????

Do you know?

How could anyone know what kind of power it has from your ambiguous text?

What size tires are on the truck that the power steering currently is installed on?

Do you know the owner?

Have you talked with them about how well the power steering that is on that truck currently works?

Hit the FAQ and read away....

Good luck!

Couple of points I would consider first:

1) This truck that has been sitting in this "meadow": are you 100% sure it does not belong to someone?

2) Is it legal to be on this land while you spend time scavenging for parts?

3) You sound like you are not 100% sure what power steering to look for. You may not be 100% sure about the integrity and reliability of these parts you intend to use for your steering. These parts may be really old, damaged, or totally unreliable. With this in mind you may be putting your safety and the safety of others at risk as a result. I believe there are two areas where scavenging for used, cheap, questionable parts does not make sense: steering and brakes. Like Steve suggests, I would spend more time reading the FAQ's and the archives. A good steering system can be built without spending a fortune. Steering needs to be strong, safe and reliable. Cutting corners can cause hassles, wobbles, breakdowns and loss of fun on a weekend outing. Cutting corners can also cause sudden death...
