    Smooth steel body fj40

Pretty awesome paint job :) It all looks so clean and smooth... like a new car. Very sharp. What happened to the windshield wipers? I've been to CT... it rains there too :D - Matt

How much would you pay for this '78??

It's a litte hard to tell from the pictures, but if the Tub is in good shape, $2000 would be a bargain, at least around here. A lot of rusty (but running) rigs seem to be bringing in several thousand... and the csot of body work can be really expensive if you're not doing it yourself. Even if...

    Transmission hump seal - gasket?

Hmm... I see the SOR ones now, they're a bit more pricey than what I had in mind. I stopped by the hardware store this morning and saw that they had some 1/4" closed cell foam that looked pretty sturdy... maybe I'll give it a try. And it's only $10. thanks - Matt

    Transmission hump seal - gasket?

I just removed my transmission hump from my 77 fj40, and discovered that the PO had sealed it on there with tar. It's a sticky mess. I'm assuming that Toyota didn't make it that way. Was this something that had typical seam sealer? I'm guessing that since it's a removeable part, it would have...

    17 mpg on my FJ40

LOL OK, fair enough... I was surpised at how high it was. Still, I really was intending that to be in the context of the comparison to my earlier mileage. - Matt BTW- Shelfboy, in case there was confusion... this is with TBI on my 2F engine, not a SBC.

    17 mpg on my FJ40

Perhaps I should repeat myself; I'm not claiming that my rig is better than anyone elses.... just saying that it's a lot better than it was. - Matt

    17 mpg on my FJ40

Kevin, I'm sure you're right... I could certainly believe that there are some awesome running 40s out there that get mileage like this. My point wasn't really to say "Hey, look how much better my TBI cruiser is than your carbed cruiser", it was more to say... "Hey, look how much better my...

    17 mpg on my FJ40

Yeah, the power is a LOT better all around. Take that with a grain of salt, though... before I did the TBI conversion, my carb was jetted and tuned for about 400 feet above sea level, and I live at 5000 ft. Never could get it running smoothly here in CO. However, John at Coyote Cruiser here in...

    17 mpg on my FJ40

I just had to post this... I took my first long drive to calculate gas mileage with my new TBI setup, and got 17 mpg! :D This was mostly on a country road, going about 55 mph, about a quarter of the trip was in traffic in town. Bullsh*t, you're saying... and I would be too. A year before I...

Straight 6 fuel injection/ throttle body CONV.

For what it's worth... I did the TBI conversion on my 2F, mostly using the tech links on the forum here, there are a couple of good ones. It was cheap... went to the junk yard and pulled most of the parts (but did buy a few new sensors). I didn't keep track of the cost of all the parts from the...

Would you drive 500 miles in your cruiser?

I drove my 40 from Athens, Ohio to Fort Collins, Colorado a few years ago when I moved here, WHILE towing a big trailer. The cruiser didn't like the trailer, but the drive was pretty comfortable otherwise. I think that's around 1400 miles. Took a couple of days longer than it should have, since...

    TBI conversion EPROM burning problem

BTW, I don't have access to my current EPROM image, since I don't have a burner. Maybe in the future, though.... - Matt

    TBI conversion EPROM burning problem

First of all, a little update. The Eprom image that I got 1) wasn't corrected by fixing the checksum. It still gave me the error when burned, and 2) when I had someone transfer the tables in it over to a new EPROM image, they were way off anyway (at least for my FJ40). That said, you can...

What happends when you drive in 4 on pavement?

If your differentials aren't locked, you shouldn't really expect to hear anything major when driving on pavement. They definitely would have squealed and skipped if your diffs were locked. - Matt

    TBI / EPROM finally complete

Barry, not from me, I'm afraid. I don't have an EPROM burner anymore, so I can't read it. - Matt

    GM TBI Idle Set Screw

I have done this conversion, and it runs great... no idle problems after having the chip tuned properly. Seems like that might be a better place to start. Before re-programming the EPROM, my idle was rough, but probably not too slow. - Matt

    TBI / EPROM finally complete

I still have some work to do before I start driving it around... the rear brakes need to be replaced, and I have a little electrical problem, and I have the seats out while I'm de-rusting the brackets.... and several other little things. With any luck, I should be able to get it all together...

    TBI / EPROM finally complete

About two weeks ago, I got tired of playing with my EPROM on my TBI converted 2F engine. It ran with the chip that was in the ECM, but not well. Since my conversion was so cheap, I decided to splurge and take the thing to have it professionally tuned. I took it over to Lundstedt Automotive in...

    Heritage economy 1/2 tubs

I think the issue with the economy line half tubs is that they can't be used with ambulance doors, because they lack the little step in the rear sill. If it weren't for that, I'd order one myself... but I don't want to buy one and then have to weld in a new sill. - Matt

    TBI conversion EPROM burning problem

OK, I opened my bin file in TunerPro (but didn't make any changes) and then saved it , which generated new checksum data. I then opened the newly saved bin file and compared the checksum with the old one, and it was Very different. So, it looked like it WAS a checksum problem! Just to double...
