I opted for some limited protection outside the cab. So I built some protection between the cab and my smaller bed, then a rack in the bed that is beefy. One directly to the frame, the other indirectly. Used thicker tubing, etc.
It allows easy transport of boats, lumber, ladders, mtn bikes...
Might also consider Lcwizards side steps. Someone even I ncorporated the factory braces to the frame with these, which I imagine would hold up to lighter bumps.
My factory running boards all had dents, I am very impressed with these.
Originally from Wyoming, disassembled into boxes in SW Montana, missing lots, no bed, sat for awhile, I bought 2 yrs ago.

the extended cab soft top option might have other uses.
aqualu is making a extended cab but the fabrication of a hard top would be an issue. but a soft top....
I have a FJ55 chassis that is finished w/ ARBed FJ60 axles. The holdup is the rust bucket 55 body that will take countless hours...
has anyone ever tried a bikini top going from the windshield to the headache rack?
I started to do this but decided the hard top provided more rollover protection than the flimsy rack.
then started thinking of a more substantial headache rack made of heavy duty steel.... idea didn't...
the toyota truck wheels work if you use spacers.
are you trying to keep the tires inside the wheel wells? not really understanding your main objective.
most of our vehicles have hi center of gravity and adding a inch of width is noticeable in stability in my vehicles. but we don't have red...
thanks much for the replies. doesn't seem to bother me except on longer trips. the no doors approach sure does work with the left foot on the side board.:)
