It lines up well against the transmission, all the bolt holes line up. Just both rails interfere with that sealing surface in the photo. That is why I was wondering if I could cut that down without any ill consequences, vs cutting the shift rails (Al is easier to cut than steel). It is a 21...
My 1985 4Runner. 1UZ swap. Advance Adapters RF1A case to R150f adapter. The transfer case shift rail hits the tailshaft housing - see photos. Has anyone run into this issue? Can I just notch that section out to clear the transfer case shift rail?
I'm going to Moab the 1st weekend of October. I am waffling on whether I should start a 3RZ swap on my 85 4Runner before the trip. I won't be able to start the project until mid August. I do have all parts ready and waiting. I will be purchasing a low mileage JDM engine. All the other parts...
Keep it, but I'm biased. I would save as many 4Runners as I possibly could if I had the $, time, and place to put them.
Don't waste your time with a 22RE. 3RZ at a minimum. 5VZ or 1UZ If you are feeling ambitious.
So this is in regards to the W55 in my 91 pickup. Yes, I know this is a 4WD forum, but the same issue could affect the W56.
Leak from output shaft. Replaced seal. Still leaking. Ok, probably excess wear of tailshaft bushing. Swap tailshaft housing from a spare W55 I have. Leak gone. Now...
+1 on Techenstein's advice.
I just had the transmission out of one of my 2WD pickups to swap tailshaft housings. Don't need to jack up engine or loosen exhaust. Slide trans back, rotate, bellhousing barely slips past pressure plate.
When installing, slide tailshaft over crossmember, rotate...
I have to subscribe. You are an inspiration. Pappy, I'm using your 2F-E write-up as a guide for my 65 FJ40 restomod. I have also pulled everything from a 2000 3RZ 4Runner (engine, harnesses, etc, etc) to swap into my 85 4Runner...after I'm done with the 1UZ-FE swap in my 93 4Runner.
116 hp and 140 lb-ft is 22RE. I think I read somewhere the early 22RE was 105 hp+140 lb ft.
The 22R was 99 hp and 129 lb-ft
ALL 85+ 4Runners were EFI.
The 22R was offered in 2WD pickups until 1990. Starting in 91 everything was EFI.
I believe the one post about 1987 being the last year for the...
In Sept 1984, Toyota switched to the lower deck height 22R/RE block. I don't remember what year they switched from a double roller chain with metal guides to a single chain with plastic guides; 1983 sticks out in my mind. We all know the notoriety of the plastic guides breaking and the chain...
So jealous of you guys out west. I hope to be living back in the PacNW before the brutal GA heat and humidity return.
Enjoying the beautiful fall weather in the North GA mountains in my 85 4Runner. My buddy has the 2004 Tacoma
ntsqd,
That was my thinking. The 3RZ has the power of the 3VZ, but does it without blowing head gaskets and in an easier to work on package. I remember back in 1991 my bro in law bought a new 2WD Xcab pickup 5 speed, 3VZ. That thing was pretty quick. Of course it was a lot lighter than a...
Pappy,
Your input is always valued since I have combed over your builds and always see your posts and you offer good knowledge and experience.
I do like the 4.56 in my 4Runner, since gears and bearings are all relatively new, wasn't planning on swapping.
As stated in my OP, I am not looking...
Thanks. I was just wanting to know if it was worth it. On paper, the power difference does not look like much, but from what I have read, in real world applications, the 3RZ does so much better.
So this is not a question of tech how to, I have searched plenty of threads for that info. I want to hear from people who have swapped a 3RZ into their rig, especially if you have done one in a Gen1 4Runner.
I want opinions and feedback.
1985 4Runner. I did a mild 22RE build back in 2009...
