Passed my Tech and General today

Bulldog, I am definitely interested in some of the data features but honestly, at this point I'm still trying to figure out what all of the buttons do:o. Eventually, as my understanding of both good practice and the equipment grows, I'll be very interested in fleshing out my understanding of...

Passed my Tech and General today

Well yesterday I went over to HRO and picked up the ARRL study guide for the Extra test and the Antenna book as well. After lurking here and working the search feature two multi band mobile units kept being mentioned with really positive reviews, the Yaesu FT 8900R and the ICOM 706MKIIG. As I...

Passed my Tech and General today

Thanks a lot. Im traveling/camping out in my Dad's basement for a week:D and don't have all my ham stuff with me so I have no idea on the CW requirement. I didn't see any CW on the Extra exam that I took today. I am planning on heading out tommorow to the closest HRO and get a hands on look at...

Passed my Tech and General today

I have been studying off and on as time permitted, for about eight weeks now. I used the Dan Romanchick free study guides and the practice tests on Hamtestonline based on the recommendations of fellow mudders. Thank you. I called the VEC who was running a test back in the U.S. near my Dad's...

    Jute replacement- water proof?

I'm interested in this topic as well. I have been concerned for a while about three things, heat from the tranny tunnel, sound dampening generally and waterproof flooring. I have emailed some of the sound dampening guys. They have all come back steering me towards thick paint on bedliners and...

Interested in/ Starting out with Ham Radios...?

Brent, Does it have to be 3 VEs? I do remember seeing a reference to needing three VEs but I also remeber various passages in the Ham Radios for Dummies book where the author talks about giving the test to folks one on one around his kitchen table. In any event I have gone to the ARRL site...

Interested in/ Starting out with Ham Radios...?

Update: the guy here has a Commercial liscence and while he is happy to help me study, can't give me the test. Guess I'll check out ARRL to see if I can find either a U.S. guy living here or a guy back in the DC/MD/No. VA area back in the states who I can test with on my next trip back up.

Interested in/ Starting out with Ham Radios...?

Yes it does. I'm going to do a U.S. test and get a U.S. license. It is interesting in that I was speaking to both some pilots and guys in my 4x4 club and they were all unclear as to what the local band plan was outside of their bit( aircraft and cb range for the 4x4 guys). I'll definitely...

Dan, Thanks. Good point. I think that I checked correctly on the FCC website:FCC: Wireless Services: Amateur Radio Service: About Amateur: Reciprocal Arrangements I'm in El Salvador for at least the next year for work. It looks like we do have a reciprocal operational relationship with...

Interested in/ Starting out with Ham Radios...?

Actually there is a guy who works with me who is a pilot. I now remember that he once said that he was a certified examiner for Tech, Gen, Extra right on up through an actual technician for tv and radio broadcasters. ( He got his degree in electrical engineering and said that the radio thing...

Guys, I have been following this thread and am studying right now for my Tech license. My grand plan is to use the ham rig in conjunction with the CB I already have for trail runs /extended off roading and camping trips/multi-country expeditions. Additionally, once I move back to the States...

    Laptop mount?

It is interesting there are really three visions of an in car pc at work here. One is a notebook pc that is mounted on fixed stand. The second, a variant of the first, with a much smaller subnotebook, think Asus Eee PC with 7 inch screen, mounted on a platform with rails hidden away in the...

    Laptop mount?

I just went down and took another look at the glove box. While it is narrow it is also deep I can easily see a small sub notebook on rails sliding out of there sideways and the swivel around for use out over the open door of the box. There would be plenty of room in the unused ashtray to mount...
