    Timing cover seal

Resolved. I tried just about every wrong way to replace a timing cover seal. In the end, it was worth the time it took to yank all the parts on the passenger side of the motor, get that cover off, pull the cam and timing plate, and replace all the related gaskets. I’ve developed a good...

    Timing cover seal

Check. Been doing a bunch of reading in prep for the re-install and that’s one of the things that I probably won‘t mess up.

Thanks for the tip. Will check that out.

The cam seems generally clean and smooth. The truck has 135K real miles with no known motor issues. I was expecting it be OK. The gears are clean and don’t show much wear.

Hope is not a plan. That squeaky seal spring motivated me to do the plate gasket, too. During the first two attempts I was hoping the plate gasket wasn’t the source of the leak. It was. I was going to be in this this for the long haul anyway. Glad it wasn’t the 4th try.

    Timing cover seal

I see a little sludge. Anything to avoid when cleaning the valve train? Was thinking I’d degrease it and then give it a bath in clean oil. And while I’m this far into it, any advice on other proactive things I should be doing?

    👆This is good advice.

    Timing cover seal

Yikes. I was about to knock out that spacer too, but paused just long enough to avoid that particular PITA. Here's a dumb question that searching doesn't seem to answer ... Do you press in this seal in dry? Talking about the outside of the seal that mates with the timing cover. And I do have a...

    Timing cover seal

You know that thin spring that wraps around the inside of the lip on the cover seal? The one that keeps the seal snug on the pulley nose? If that little jerk of a spring falls off the seal, it’ll create a squeaky noise. Just FYI. Mine was both off and broken. Silver lining is that I’m going to...

    Timing cover seal

Taking off the cap doesn’t fix it. So, I could see how the timing cover perhaps became vertically tweaked a little bit, pushing that metal spacer off of a horizontal plane… and bringing it into contact with the pulley. Joy. Looking forward to try #3 this weekend. Thanks all.

    Timing cover seal

Hi all. Below is a video with decent sound. Some things to keep in mind ... - My engine isn't warmed up. - Belts are disconnected. - All my vacuum lines are connected. I'm 99.5% sure I have no leaks. - The sound is absolutely coming from around the timing cover. - It does kinda sound like a...

    Timing cover seal

Great info @Blastservices. I now have another cover gasket and seal (perks of living not too far from SOR). If the squeal/squeak/whistle/nuisance doesn’t go away soon, it will be interesting to see what evidence appears after I tear it apart a 3rd time. I didn’t wiggle the cover firmly when the...

This is what I thought, too. I think the notch just allows you to place it against the gear.

    Timing cover seal

Does the slinger notch mate with that key? I just took it for a longer drive to make a gasket run to SOR. I'm fairly certain it's only making the noise when the engine is cool. Once it warms up, it goes away. And since it was mentioned the seal may be whistling from crank case pressure ... you...

    Timing cover seal

My PCV hose is hooked up. Here's a pic of the pulley nose. Am I correct in assuming that ... 1. The seal rides towards the pulley side of the harmonic balancer? That black mark was from install try #1, and the mark came off easy with a little high grit sand paper and no sign of wear. The two...

    Timing cover seal

Yes, I'm loosely installing the cover before the pulley is in place. My first try was pretty wonky. Took too long, used engine oil to lubricate (which seems to have been an OK thing to do). Regardless, I'm not too confident about the first attempt. I was more careful the second time. Not sure...

    Timing cover seal

Bumping this thread with one more question. I think I'm going to go for try #3 this weekend. I can't find definitive info on whether or not you should lubricate the outside of the seal before pressing it in ... or do it dry. What's he correct method? I've been using a bit of grease to help it...

Hmmmm. Was the noise a squeal or something more mechanical and metal sounding?

    Timing cover seal

If by oil slinger, do you mean that concave disk that sits in front of the small cog on the crank? Mine has that too. Not sure how it could be rubbing. How did you know that was robbing in the cover? If you could see wear on the back of the cover, mine seems pretty pristine.

    Timing cover seal

it started to whine again. It’s not terrible so I’m gonna leave it alone for a bit, but something is out of whack. Perhaps the seal isn’t pressed in perfectly. Nothing else makes much sense.
