Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

Thanks, I might take you up on that. I’d like to drive one that’s in good condition and up to date on maintenance.

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I went to look at this 2002 LX470 the other day. The AHC amazingly actually worked, though the sunroof did not. It had the exhaust manifold tick on startup, though it quieted down after a minute. I was shocked at how heavy and imprecise the steering was, however; the thing turned like a battle...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

Yea I’d guess it’s probably about the same on maintenance as a 3.4 Tacoma of the same age, mileage, and service history, but parts for 100 are probably more expensive. Then there’s the AHC variable if it has that.

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I get the feeling that the newer IFS Land Cruiser are more reliable than the older models, but perhaps less durable and simple to work on. When they do go wrong, it seems like they can be more expensive and difficult to fix, and aren’t designed to be limped home or fail “positively” i.e. brake...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I bet it can actually get out of its own way up on the passes also, unlike an 80 series or 1G Tacoma.

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

Would you say LCs have better road manners when modified (3" lift, armor etc.), than a minitruck? Also, I'd be curious how you'd compare the 80 and 100 series on and off-road. Ik there's a ton of threads comparing them, and the general consensus seems to be that a 100 will go at least 95% of...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

Yea most of the trails I do are pretty mild, so I'm hoping the IFS will hold up decently well. At least a rack for a Tacoma isn't crazy expensive. I think the little Tacoma really shines on those type of narrow tracks out in the woods. We don't have as many rocky hardcore trails out here like up...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I'd like to drive one locally to see how I like it. I may end up just learning to love the Tacoma. It's great out on the trails, but its highway manners (or lack thereof) are starting to wear on me.

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

They may be good trucks, but I’d be hesitant to get into a 200 given the complexity and expense of the common repairs. Even just a radiator can cost $1500 on those. And changing a starter on the 3UR makes the 2UZ look easy. Not to mention cam tower leaks, etc. They also look like an engorged...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I have a 96, so it’s a different IFS design. Not very beefy, but it’s nice and light for getting into the woods. That’s weird how some front diffs failed just in light snow, and then others like yours hold up to sustained abuse over years. Maybe there was just a bad batch with some kind of...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I’m guessing you must live in the salt belt. But anyway yea that sounds like a lot of the common 90s Toyota stuff, only I’d guess it’s more expensive on the LC than a Tacoma, for instance. Would you say it’s easier to work on than an 80 series? It sounds like it’d be cost-prohibitive to hire...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

Does your 352k mile 80 burn much oil? At 230k my HG and bottom end was solid, but it was burning and leaking a fair bit of oil, I think partly from the valve stem seals and arch seal, both of which are not very novice-friendly jobs. From what I researched this is not uncommon for 80s around this...

I’m curious what makes you say that; is it the 5-speed transmission?

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I must be mistaken on the extent of the diff breakages/replacements. I thought I remembered there was a recall or service campaign, but I must be wrong. Would you say the 100 series struggles in muddy terrain due to its sheer weight? I wonder if a GX470 would be any better in slick, tight...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

Yea I had heard of the starter job being a PITA on the 2UZ. Surely many of the 2 pinion diffs have been swapped out for the newer version by now? I’m not necessarily opposed to ATRAC, I’d just heard rumours it could possibly contribute to front diff failure in some cases. I’m not claiming to...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I would go for another 80 series but it's very hard to find a reasonablly clean one that isn;t totally ragged out. If a decent 96-97 came up for a reasonable price I'd jump on it though. As I said I'm also looking at GX470s; I'm not sure if they've also had front diff issues associated with...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I was thinking most of the 2-pinion diffs had been replaced by now, but that's really just conjecture on my part. Can't you swap in a 4-pinion diff relatively easily, maybe with an LSD to increase strength? To me, timing belts and heater T's seem easier to deal with than head gaskets, arch...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

I appreciate the reply, but I'm not sure where you saw I was "whining" about the ATRAC system. I was simply wanting more info. I refer to the post below in the thread linked below, by a very respected LC specialist btw. I know this is an old thread, hence why I was seeking further insights...

Considering replacing my 96 Tacoma with a 100 series

After going from a 97 Land Cruiser to a 96 Tacoma, I am regretting giving up all the interior space. and durability of a Land Cruiser, and am also looking for something better suited to a daily half-hour commute, while also perhaps being more resistant to frame rust when driven in wintry...
