    Builds Project 2027: 1977 FJ40 Rebuild

I did tell @Racer65 to hold off on shipping my doors until Mark @65swb45 can have a good look at them in person. I’m hoping he will go over them with a keen eye and give his blessing on whether these are in-fact the holy grail of Cruiser doors or not. I know there are countless 40’s running...

All has been quiet on the FJ40 front as of late. Wintertime in Idaho without a top means not a lot of driving except on the nicest of days, well that’s about to change. I’ve been on the hunt for a good quality rust-free set of front doors for at least 2 years, with no luck. It’s the final piece...

It wasn’t cement grey. Instead what I did was take a can of Rustoleum Smoke Gray and had them match that. When I got it home I realized it was virtually the same color as the leather so I went back to the auto paint store and asked for a quart or pint (can’t remember) of pure black. I took...

And today I decided to initiate the girls into a northern rite of passage. Something that I had done as a kid and absolutely loved. I’m so glad to finally have them out of the concrete crime-infested sweat box. I was chatting with the wife earlier today and we realized we’ve spent more time...

Have been busy with getting the family all settled in over the last month or so but I did manage to go out and get a few glamor shots before the snow fell. Sometimes you just know when something belongs, and it’s an undeniable truth that FJ40s belong in the mountain west.

Slow on updates because a lot has been going on, specifically the family and I moved from Houston to Idaho. I’m from the northwest and finally had had enough of the South Coast. Between taking a new job, selling and buying a home, it’s been an insane few months. The move back north was more or...

I made bases out of 3/16” plate and drilled them at the OE locations. I didn’t tie them into the frame, but may at some later date. For now I’ll enjoy my “stockish” rebuild, with pretty paint. Once there’s a significant ding or dent, Katy bar the door, cause then there be little to stop me from...

Sorry for the delay. Absolutely swamped with life’s happenings right now. Anyways, I hope these closeups help.

Ran into a fellow Cruiserhead last night. A beautiful example of a ‘78 original survivor, and it’s a daily driver. He said he’s on Mud but for the life of me I can’t remember his username.

https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/military-humvee-seat-belt-kit-4-piece?a=1781402 These are the belts I bought and if I remember correctly, they were very reasonably priced. They work great, but show they’re currently out of stock.

I welded up a DOM cage because the OEM cage is basically a joke. Once welded up I drilled out where I wanted the belts to attach and sleeved it. I then put a Grade 8 bolt with nut in and welded the nut to the cage. I won’t be home for a couple days but I’d be happy to take a couple closeup...

There’s actually two of them there. The red one is a GoldenDoodle and the black one is a BernieDoodle. Great dogs!

My daily conundrum on which to drive. Decisions, decisions…. Actually it’s not even a remotely fair contest.

Definitely not something I’m opposed to. I’m interested in the elevation ranges for each set of jets. 4000’ will be most of the time with occasional (hunting) trips. I’m thinking 4000’ is probably the lower range for high altitude jets so it may be worth putting them in and getting the timing...

With my pending move to Idaho at what elevation should I consider running high altitude jets in the carb? The town I’ll be living in is at 4000’ but I’ll be spending considerable time at much higher elevations while exploring. Hoping I’ll find a middle ground versus having to change them out...

Not quite the longevity I was expecting from a brand new speedo cable. It last exactly 245.8 miles. 😒

Kind of a personal update but my family and I have decided to move to Idaho. Just accepted a job offer and will be heading back to the Northwest in a month. I moved to Houston from eastern Washington 9 years ago for a job. My heart never left the northwest and I’ve longed to go back to God’s...

Overheating problem fixed! Replaced the fan clutch and flushed the system again. I vacuum filled the coolant and put in exactly what I drained out so I’m pretty sure I didn’t have air in the system. Put 75 miles on it at all speeds to include the normal stop and go Houston traffic with a heat...

Just got home from Idaho today and had these waiting for me. I’ll get to work tomorrow replacing the fan clutch, flushing the coolant system and refilling. Hoping this takes care of my overheating issue. The new fan clutch is substantially harder to rotate than what I have on there now so I...
