Hi all,
Its been about 4 years since I was active here...the 1974 FJ40 was in storage for most of that time but it is going in for inspection and engineering report for its roadworthy cert this week.
I havent gotten around to restoring the top as it is always off hence the paint mismatch...
My northern friend;
The fj40 is in the US now (and in storage there.) I'm moving to OZ indefinately and thinking about getting a '75 there. Yes, I'd love to bring it back to the US IF I return....
Wouldn't pouring oil into the intake create carbon deposits in the cylinders? I don't like...
It will be sitting for at least a year. Its not for sale...i built this from the ground up and had previously (stupidly) sold off the FJ I grew up with and won't make that mistake again. So its in storage for a while.
Hopefully not w/o a cruiser...I'm going to the cruizer homeland, to OZ for...
How about prepping for storage
My FJ is about to go in storage for a year...should I pull the plugs, dribble in some oil and turn it over a few times (without spark!)?
Anything else? It will be outside, but covered. Mothballs in the cab and under the hood? Park it on boards/gravel?
WHat else?
Honk, where are you? There are LOTS of issues to consider when importing one of these to the US if you are here...check the posts on the International board..
Uhhh....Dale, how did you change the fan belt? From the pics, yours looks exactly like mine! Doesn't yours go directly and only between the crank and the fan? No tensioner there...how did you do it?
Thanks for the pics guys! Sorry, I was on the road for a few days...
John, my water pump is...
Rich,
Thanks. I am hoping not to have to pull the cylinders...I have no leaking and the adjusters turn and function properly...
any other ideas?
thanks!
The drums are freshly-turned and the brakes are already bedded-in (but new-ish pads.)
No fluid leaks.
All the brake cylinders are dry and the adusters work.
Flesh fluid and bled.
It does need an alignment, but it drives fairly straight when I let go of the wheel. Maybe hard braking...
I noticed she was really pulling left, esp under hard braking. I mean enough to induce a spin if it were a little snowy (which it has been.) So I went around and adjusted all the drums so they were just barely backed out from dragging on all 4 wheels. It got worse. So I backed off the front...
Haynes is useless and I am an idiot.
My 74FJ40 has the original fixed fan with a belt driven directly off the crank. Problem is, there is no tensioner...so how do you loosen the belt to replace the belt?
john
So I've done some more driving around and watching the AF meter. Here's what I'm observing;
when at 0-1/2 throttle, I show lean and occassionally get a"bang-wheeze"
when I run it at 1/4 choke (when warmed up), 0-1/2 throttle is perfect on the AF mix meter and full throttle shows rich...
Drop it on the ground and take it for a spin. I was v nervous about this myself, but I've had no problems, no ratcheting, no squeaking. I do get a surprising amount of understeer at high speeds (60mph +) when I floor it at the apex of a turn.... ;-)
I'm shopping 'cause I'm movin there. I have been looking at the LC78's too, especially because there's a huge tax benefit from leasing.
But I'd like to collect another, unique FJ there....maybe a later model FJ40-style with a turbo-diesel....
