Re-gear 80 diesel conversion or rubber overdrive?

Right, checked my vin plate and, as I suspected, there's nothing immediately recognisable as the diff ratios... Any other ways of finding out? Jamie

Re-gear 80 diesel conversion or rubber overdrive?

I can certainly have a look although I'm currently 100 miles away from my 80 so probably won't be for a few days. Dougal - I can't even remember why this is relevant to the OP but I promise you that Land Cruisers are driving around the UK in reasonable numbers and that a significant number of...

Re-gear 80 diesel conversion or rubber overdrive?

Being honest I'm not sure... From memory my 5 speed 1HD-T 80 doesn't rev as high as that so I'm guessing so... Can I tell from the chassis number/VIN plate?

Re-gear 80 diesel conversion or rubber overdrive?

Sorry to crap on your parade Dougal but it's not just Australia that got lots of manual turbodiesel cruisers... 5 speed 1HD-T 80's are relatively common here and after 95 (ish) when they switched to the 1-HDFT, they were ALL sold as 5 speeds! Even manual 100's are not especially rare...

Coolant temperature VERY hot while towing

I think you might be confusing torque convertors and viscous couplings... The only scenario likely to generate significant heat from the viscous coupling is if the front and rear driveshafts are turning at significantly different speeds which isn't the case here. The viscous coupling has no...

    VX package?

Yeah, they changed to the 24 valve version sometime around '95. At the same time they dropped the Auto box, so in the UK at least, all the 24valve Diesels are manual. As far as I'm aware all the UK diesels had the 24 volt starting system and were all fitted with the "cold climate package" ie...

    VX package?

Yeah all the officially imported 80's were fulltime. Though I think I'll put up with fulltime 4x4 when they've all got lockers, most are diesel and there's roughly a 50:50 split between auto and manual. :D I sometimes wish for part-time but in reality fulltime fits my application pretty well...

    VX package?

Ah... that explains the confusion! Yeah full time 4wd and 5 speed from the factory. Every 80 sold here was full time and quite a lot of them were 5 speed. In fact after 1995, they stopped selling diesel autos all together... Jamie

    VX package?

What has the 5 speed got to do with the lockers?! Yeah, front, rear and centre, same as on a locker equipped American 80. Jamie

19mpg average from Moab to Seattle with 1HD-T Engine

I'm assuming you guys are all quoting in US gallons? If so, those figures are probably a touch on the low side but acceptable given the roofrack, heavyload etc... My long term average over the last 30k has been 25.1 MPG imperial (so just under 21 US) but that includes some heavy towing along...

    VX package?

Yeah, I realised that. The individual models still mean a different thing depending on which market the vehicle was originally sold in. For instance, every 80 sold in the UK came with with permanent 4x4 and axle lockers even if it was badged a GX. Whereas there are many JDM VX limited that...

    VX package?

VX means different things in different markets... My 80 for example is badged VX but is a 5 speed 1-HDT with manual cloth seats and no AC. It does however have a sunroof, heated seats, the 3 difflocks, 24V starting, heated fuel filter and radiator blind...

    pulling a trailer

As far as I know all 80's in Europe are rated for 3500kg so something over 7700 lbs... My 1-HDT tows a 3500kg trailer on a fairly regular basis without any issues. I tend to stick to 60mph and mine's a manual which removes any issues with overheating transmissions etc.

    Inside pic of your 80

Every 80 with a tailgate already has a pair of bottle openers fitted from the factory. The lower tailgate latches work so well that I managed to convince my gf that they were actually a Toyota option... :) Jamie

    School me on recovery straps

No way, shoveling takes ages and is pretty hard work. Have you ever tried to dig out an 80 that's got snow packed under the frame?! It's much harder than it looks! Why would I shovel if there's a vehicle nearby that can give a quick tow?

how much fuel will my 80 use idling all day

Do JDM 80's not have the factory fitted radiator roller blind? I thought it came with the package fitted to vehicle sold in "cold" countries, along with 24v starting, heated seats, heated fuel filter and headlight washers.

how much fuel will my 80 use idling all day

Yep, my 1HDT is the same, to even begin to get the engine to warm up you need to use the idle up knob. My diesel Audi gets around the issue by having an auxiliary electric coolant heater that keeps the coolant warm in colder weather. I once switched it off to see if it made any difference...

how much fuel will my 80 use idling all day

How cold was it? My diesel 80 starts almost instantly down to at least -30C... It does have the benefit of the 24 volt starting system though.

how much fuel will my 80 use idling all day

Diesel engines use hardly any fuel idling especially when compared to petrol (gas) ones. I remember reading somewhere that the Mercedes 2.2 CDI 4 cylinder diesel consumes less than a pint per hour... Why not just start it and run it at a fast idle every few hours? The engine will still be...

    How deep without a snorkel?

The intake's pretty well designed to keep water out as long as you stay moving... I've had water over the bonnet (hood?) of my diesel 80 a couple of times and the air filter's been bone dry afterwards. Got a snorkel sitting here waiting to be fitted though, just to be safe as river...
