Pulled it in the driveway just before I had to come to work. Seems to be ok. Tomorrow I'll get in on my insurance and give it a test.
Thanks for all the help!
I usually use white lithium grease and I have a craftsman torque wrench. I bought eveything today and as long as nothing goes wrong I should have it back together by tomorrow afternoon.
no offense, I know I'm out of my area. I just need to know if I can run what I have with a new set of old style bearings or if it will die in 500 miles. Do I need to replace the rods/pistons/rings/all of it or just go as is? It runs pretty well as is...
Sorry I didn't give it it's "fancy" name. I was taught it's a crank pulley. The fact that it is a balanced rotating mass gives it the inherent quality of absorbing minor vibrations. Harmonic Balancer sounds like Master of the Custodial Arts, still just a janitor... my fault.
I was out at the...
I got it all apart, everything looks really good except the dead bearing. I will measure it all tomorrow. Is that the harmonic balancer that fits in between the cam and timing chain? I actually found one of those out at the boneyard yesterday, don't know about using it because it runs good now...
Its more that I alloted a set amount for this truck and anything more comes out of my motorcycle or Subaru fund. I bought this on a whim, I've had a few 4runners and land cruisers before and I have had really good luck flipping cars this year. My plan was to drive it for a while and then pass...
Yeah I was kinda making sure I wasn't taking advice from a crazy person. The problem here is that the budget for this build only has about another $150ish in it, so, it may just end up in a lake. The cylinder walls all felt good, but I'll guess I'll know more tomorrow.
143,000 but I have...
why not just new bearings? other than the clatter and leak it idles smooth. Does it chew up the rods and crank that easily/quickly? When you say rings, you are talking piston rings, correct? Are they going to be damaged due to the rods' instability on the crank?
Throwing this back up because the rattle is in the bottom end, I was hearing it echo through the exhaust. I alreday did my valves and the cam and rockers look good. It's a pretty steady clacking and but when you rev it up to 1200 and it idles down the noise falters, kinda like two stroke...
Fired right up and pings like a bastard! I'ts a metal on metal slap, corresponding to RPMs. Since it's just me here I can't tell for sure if it is top end or bottom end. Sounds like bottom but there were very fine shavings in the top around the cam.
Now what? I am probably not up to pulling...
Sorry for the confusion, my motor is a 22re, the spare is a 22R, pre 84. This is all academic now as I already have it most of the way back together. Radiator and fan go back in the morning. So I guess I'll find out tomorrow! It will either run or not, right?
Cylinders still have faint...
I checked and all of the pistons have that divot. I just missed it because I wasn't looking for it. KLF is saying that is factory and Ive done a little looking today, seems he's right. Since thats the case Im going back to a simple head gasket failure and I'll put it back together tomorrow and...
The head a friend has is older. Double row chain, steel guides, etc.
I went out and looked, I just flat out missed the cutouts in the other pistons. I was only focused on 1 and 4 because thats where the gasket failed. Is the 22re really that far of an interference engine?
Dunno. Bought it off the back of a lot with no history other than running like crap. I really just want to make it run. Will a 22R head bolt right on without swapping the crank or anything? I know the timing chains and pulleys are different, but I know where a good one is. If I just swap out...
Been a while since I sold my 80's, so I haven't been on here. I picked up an 87 4Runner running rough. I figured it was the head gasket but when I opened it up, cylinders 1 and 4 are being hit by the intake valves. What is the cheapest option out of this? Just replacing those two valves or all...
On a side note, depending on whether you want one for you or for production, I built a diesel bike out of a 1974 BMW and a 3 cyl., inline 1.1 liter Kubota generator motor. mounted 2 radiators on the front and the shaft drive and transmission were easy to mate up with a homemade adapter plate...
