I don't have first hand knowledge, but on most toyota models there's a difference in the input shaft for manual vs auto.
Edit: good lord, this is an old thread. Cheers.
Made a hair of progress on the front gears.
Took a total guess on the pinion spacer (I recycled the old master shim without thinking)
Got the ring gear on the ARB (totol PITA) and played with setting up the backlash a bit.
I... got close on the shim job and then I did a pattern - not enough shim...
Rear end is done.
My arms and back were a bit sore after, but the 4.88s are installed and the diff is back in the rear, axles are back on, rear brakes were replaced - rebuilt calipers, new pads and rotors.
If I have a complaint - my drive pattern looked great, but my reverse/coast pattern has...
I was stuck in some heavy snow one night - like 3-4 feet and I'm pretty sure that the locker wasn't working at that point. It was installed by a previous owner. I also hit a sheet of ice the next day. I'm not sure which event killed the diff.
One more pro of the Toyota locker - the mechanism...
I've been working on my diffs, I figured I'd make a few notes on the difference.
I've got both diffs out of my 1999 100 series for gearing. Last winter I shredded the ring gear up front and decided to change both of them to 4.88s in the process.
The Toyota locker:
Is super simple - It simply...
Tonight I worked on my rear diff just a little bit - finished wire brushing things, cleaned out the pinion seal surface a bit and pressed on the pinion bearings. Tomorrow I'll warm up the new ring gear and see if I can't get it mounted to the carrier. I figure slow and steady wins the race here...
Welp, since I last updated this thread, I moved, went off in my camper and left the poor DDoD to sit after moving.
Upon return, I went to investigate a grinding brake and found a caliper piston was getting into a rotor in the rear.
This week, I pulled apart the rear brakes, dissasembled my ARB...
True, but I was pulling my calipers anyway - on one of them the caliper was into the rotor.
I considered cutting the brackets but I've hacked enough on this truck.
I needed to pull my axles for re-gearing and was surprised at the lack of info on pulling the 100's semi floating rear axles.
I found loads of vids and photosfor the full floating rear axle, but of course, my 1999 UJZ came with Semi floating axles.
(And I kept failing when searching for a FSM)...
I needed a 12k winch to shove into my 2500HD. I usually buy tigersharks but the price has gone up lately so I decided to give the smittybilt winch a shot. This is for my diesel truck, and I don't expect to have to break out the winch too often. My LC on the other hand is getting a rebuilt modded...
I've been slacking on this. It keeps friggin snowing. (Three feet over the weekend)
Anyhow, I've totally disassembled the front diff. I've decided to do the rear after the front is done - I want two wheels on the ground for safety sake.
I'm down to getting a bearing puller to remove the old...
Well, took a few minutes with a punch and my dead blow hammer, ring gear is off the locker. Not too bad.
I used the OTRAM arb install video as a great reference for this little project. Definitely have to compliment that guy.
I need to clean up my bench and I'll tear down the ARB this week, but...
Yeah, I'm half tempted to let someone have it for $500 and just do a new one, but I also like keeping my money.
Its down to me pulling off the old bearings and tearing it down.
