I just went to Cometic’s web site and looked up my 1996 LC and Cometic only offers 101.5 bore head gaskets. Is everyone who used their head gasket boring out their block? I thought I had read some using Cometic and not boring.
The bb is to disable the EGR system. No flow means the valve won’t open. It’s believed the hot exhaust gas contributes to the head gasket failure at the #6 cylinder. The EGR tube also melts the wiring harness at the back of the head.
If you’re planning on swapping in a V8 and paying a shop to do all the labor, budget for about $20k for a 5.3 swap. A rebuild of your factory motor by a competent 80 shop will likely run about half that depending on what you all have done while it’s apart.
I confirmed with Ron Davis that it doesn’t come with a petcock, only a plug. They recommended a stainless steel petcock from McMaster Carr, no specific part #, to prevent corrosion.
I have a Ron Davis radiator on order. Does anyone know if the factory petcock can be swapped over? If not, can anyone point me to an aftermarket one that has the same type of drain that you can hook a tube up to for draining?
I had the same issue on mine when I did a full refresh on the front axle. I would have sworn I drove the races on the passenger side all the way in, but when I pulled it back apart (it was bugging me) I found the inner had a small gap.
I picked up the group 31 X2 Power marine version for the extra terminals. Fit the battery tray fine after trimming off a couple of the plastic ribs on one corner of the battery. I used the group 31 kit to extend the fusible link.
I have an ARB on mine now with stock suspension and a Warn M12 with synthetic rope waiting to go in it. The ARB dropped me a little less than an inch and weighs about 70 pounds. The winch is another 75-80 and I don’t want to drop it another inch. I don’t think it’s so much about the weight...
Light Carfax is no issue. Talk to the owner and get a feel for if he did his own maintenance.
Light surface rust is not an issue on the frame.
$13k is in the area of what I was seeing for similar trucks when I was looking, so I would buy it.
