Location
Mooresville, NC
Sorry to crash your board, I am a long time mud-guy, and have been involved with cruisers for almost 20 years. Lived in New England all my life. I have lived in Northern VT for 14 years now.

I am interviewing with a company in Mooresville- may get the job, too early to tell. What would be nice areas to live? I hear nice things about Davidson, Troutville, Mooresville. Any other thoughts? Never been to Charlotte, is it OK?

Looking to buy a house, around $175 +/- and have a young boy and a dog. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Rabid, I'll let the Charlotte folks chime in here, but want to welcome you if you do decide to move here. NC is great! I'm in central NC, in "The Triangle" (Raleigh) area. I'm 2 hours from great beaches and about the same from the beautiful mountains. I was born and raised in NC and one thing I will tell you is that if you move here you will love the people. We have a great family here in ONSC as well and I find myself spending more and more of my time with friends I have met through the club. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help and I'm sure the Charlotte locals will chime in about locations. Are you looking for suburb type living or open rural are?

Hey Rabid. I've only lived in Charlotte for about 4.5 yrs so others may have more (better) info for you.
What I can tell you is that Mooresville, Davidson and surrounding areas are nice. Some of those places still have a small town feeling with their historical downtown areas, although there has been alot of development in the past few years. You have Lake Norman and quite a few parks close by. Property taxes will also be less if you stay out of Mecklenburg Co. which is where Charlotte is. Not sure on the avg housing prices in that area.

Charlotte is busier, more crowded. But of course you are closer to the big malls, etc. Still close to Mooresville and not a bad commute (if you live in north Charlotte) since you would be travelling opposite most of the traffic. Housing prices are pretty good if you are buying (not if you're selling) right now. In addition to real property taxes, all of NC enjoys  having to pay personal property taxes on cars, boats, etc. not sure if you have that in VT, but just something you should be prepared for.

I'm sure more knowledgeable people will chime in soon as well. Wish you the best on your interviewing process.

I'll second what Jorge said.
If you want the big city, close to everything, feel then charlotte is for. Only problem is charlotte never got rid of it's antiquated set up. So it takes forever to get from one side of the city to the other.

Mooresville is beautiful.

I think the best mix would be Huntersville though. Look into that area.

House prices vary but you can easily find one in any nice area around here for that price.

I've seen some in charlotte go for 85k with 3 bedrooms, bonus room and 2200 square feet, just because it was a foreclosure. Nothing wrong with it at all.

You guys are pretty darned friendly. Thanks for the replies. I am talking to a realtor, and will be headed down that was soon to check out the areas you have all mentioned.

Like I said, it is still pretty early as I have only had the phone interview, just getting a feel for the whole thing and want to be prepared.

Drop me a line, pm for number, when you are in town.... I normally have a well stocked fridge. Well stocked lots of :beer::beer: and not much else

I agree with Al and Jorge.

Charlotte is a nice "big" city but there are plenty of area's that surrond the metro area that have a nice small town feel.

Kind of the best of both worlds as you can still access the benefits of having a city near by but you don't have to deal with big city problems if you don't want to.

Also agree with Ramon...ONSC is a great group of people!

Best of luck with the job!

Damn it I was cheated. I didn't see the part about just the 15, 16 and 17th. I did mine when that stupid thing first appeared at the begining of the month......

So i'm guessing my $20 didn't go towards the BRc

For some reason Al still thinks he's in Cali. where people are more important and need to get to places fast. Here in the south, we move at a more relaxed pace. We get there when we get there.
This is coming from the guy who got a speeding ticket on my way out to OBX this past weekend, though! :grinpimp:

Nah in Cali there are direct routes to everything to get there fast, there are also back routes and old highways...... everything here is a backroute, which I like to take if i'm doing a long drive I don't do often.... but every day to work F that.

And yes we are more important :flipoff2:

Doesn't it take like 2hrs to go 20miles anywhere in Cali??? I take that back, I have only visited Sacramento, for work, and it wasn't too bad. Reminded me a lot of Raleigh traffic-wise.

Well there is rush hours and in busy California metro areas, yes it can take a long time to get somewhere, not quite 2 hours for 20 miles though.
But when it's not like that your golden. None of these traffic lights that take 10 minutes to change even if you are the only one at the intersection or having to travel in zig zags for 100 miles to only go 40 if a straight line is available....but we are getting far off topic here.... thanks for prodding me with that stick Brian :grinpimp:

I've got to show Rabid what happens when you poke a Yeti!

See what you're going to get into, Rabid?

I'll eat your babies

Seriously Rabid we like to kid each other in this group. One big happy family. Like I said drop me a line when you are in the area.

I appreciate it guys.
We are brutal to each other here, so my sarcasm should fit right in.

My $.02 - Stay out of Mecklenburg Co. and find a home in Iredell Co, near your work or perhaps neighboring Cabarrus Co. For your son, I've heard the schools are better in and around Mooresville than N. Mecklenburg and I can only imagine that the property taxes would be less in either county than in Mecklenburg. Finally, you can likely get more square footage for the money in Iredell or Cabarrus.

Also, be prepared for when there is even a remote chance of snow or ice. Everyone is required to run to the grocery store for bread and milk as businesses close down if there is more than a half inch.

David has the right idea in his user name. If only you were closer to the south side of town. One day I will be afforded an opportunity to move back to SC.
